Nice farm shops and coffee stops near the A3/A303?

I'm a nervous driver with a tiny bladder who's going to do a lot of trips back and forth along the A3/A303 between London and Honiton in the coming months. Could I ask for any pointers on farm shops, coffee places, garden centres and suchlike to break up the trip?

The cafe at Dummer Down Farm (fun fact! I believe it’s where Fergie grew up) is nice. Their other outlets are probably worth a look too. Agree Teals nice as well - not cheap though.

Definitely Teals. And Otter Valley Ice Cream on the a30.
There is a convenient Starbucks on the a30 just outside Honiton if you are desperate for a wee by then.

Download and set up Waze on your car if you can or phone if you don't have an infotainment system. It's invaluable if there are traffic issues which there a lot of at the moment due to the dualling of the a303 at Sparkford.

Stretchedresources · 22/10/2024 12:20

Teals!
I love that place.

Thommasina · 22/10/2024 12:21

Sadly there is talk of a huge Gloucester services type service station just a bit further along from Teals. I feel really sorry for them.

benid · 22/10/2024 13:06

Bah - I was going to post a link to the Alastair Sawday website "The Extra Mile" which tells you exactly this - nice places to stop instead of service stations.

Turns out it's a book not a website BAH.

Oh, great suggestions! Thanks all!

Weyhill (edge of Andover) has a couple of options just off the A303:

and

Might be a bit early into your journey, but it can be good to have a stop before you hit the Stonehenge traffic jam!

Edit: I have no idea why that link says its near Reading, its definitely not!

Stourhead (National Trust). Nice restaurant and farm shop on site.

White row near Frome close to A36 but not far off A303 is terrific- has a great farm shop, fabulous cafe and a chip shop -

FelixtheAardvark · 22/10/2024 13:47

There's an excellent cafe at Mere in Wilts whose name totally escapes me! Just by the turning for the town (the A303 by-passes it).

Choux · 22/10/2024 13:54

Hillbrush at Mere. Amazing and only about two mins from the 303.

Just off the A3, so might be a bit close to the London end.

The tea shop there is called Eliza's. It's a separate entity to the farm shop.

I've not been but have been researching for a trip and there's a nice looking cafe at Wincanton, so a few minutes off the A303 called River Cale Cafe. All the reviews look good.

Do you mean ‘Sprout and Flower’ (or similar?!).

I bought a double espresso there once, kept me going for about 12 hours😂.

smallbluethings · 22/10/2024 14:40

Cartgate picnic area is not exactly classy, far from it, but a handy place to stop for a stretch. The toilets inside the cafe are nice than the outside public ones. The cafe is a typical full English everything with chips type, but again useful if you're stuck. I never go past Cartgate without stopping for a wee 😂

Thommasina · 22/10/2024 14:48

There's also a new Macdonalds and a Costa on the Ilminster roundabout (not quite what you asked for but needs must!)

Papyrophile · 22/10/2024 16:06

There's a Costa and a McDonalds at Solstice Services just before Salisbury, and another fast food place on the Durrington roundabout. Neither thrilling. Wayne's at Yeovilton used to be our go to breakfast stop, but it closed although it looked as if something was happening there last time I drove past.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/10/2024 16:20

@Thommasina yep- I had missed the Honiton bit- realised after I had posted!!

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 22/10/2024 16:24

Do you mean M3 rather than A3? That's the logical route from the A303 to London. Newlyns Farm is just off the M3 at Hook and is a lovely farmshop/cafe.

felinelucky · 22/10/2024 16:36

Wow, I'm glad I asked! I'm almost getting excited about the trip!

OP posts:
Stretchedresources · 22/10/2024 16:42

Newlyns is an easy pop off the M3 as you head down. Bought the best mozzarella I've ever had from there in lockdown. As per Teals, just make sure you don't let your spending run riot, it's all so nice.
