What's with the celebrity obsession?

Why do we admire celebrities? Most have little talent (Katie Price for example).......

Why don't we admire charity shop volunteers, or social workers, for example?

I don't get it.

People are easily brainwashed into star gazing by television and social media.

AlwaysGinPlease · 19/10/2024 22:07

When you say we...I don't admire celebrities.

Clamfoo · 19/10/2024 22:08

One word: Status.

It's not just celebrities, nowadays we have influencers, instagrammers and youtubers who I suppose become celebrities in their own right.

And culture these days is to want excess. Celebrities have this. Your average girl on the street wants the same stuff.

Beautiful, rich, glamourous, cool? I guess people want money and to be popular. Kim Kardasian's life seems more aspirational than Linda from Dorset who volunteers in Barnados sorting out bags of dead people's clothes.

I know what you mean though. The world needs better role models.

It's low-rent to care about low-rent celebrities. I don't know anyone in real life who does.

MillyMollyMandHey · 19/10/2024 22:17

Actually I do, DH's ex wife... she's low-rent

Charisma

Do people really “admire” Katie price though? Or is it more a voyeuristic obsession with her and her lifestyle choices, that are so easy to find plastered all over the media?

ShowerOfShites · 19/10/2024 22:22

I really don't get celebrity obsession either OP.

But I'm curious as to why you think people can't admire celebrities and charity shop volunteers/social workers?

hanali · 19/10/2024 22:25

Thing is so many people do get drawn into low rent celebrities. You only have to see the viewing figures for tv shows like Love Island, I'm a Celebrity....

OrangeGreens · 19/10/2024 22:29

Well people don’t admire Katie Price do they? Widely admired celebs are beautiful, talented, stylish or all three. And rich. We tend to admire people like that even when they’re not famous.

I'm not a fan of celebrity culture. At all. But you'd have to be extremely naïve about human nature to ask this question. People admire and aspire to lives that are different from and more exciting and glamorous than their own. It's only natural. However much you might think charity volunteers or social workers are doing a good thing, it's unlikely you'd want to be following them on Instagram or looking at their latest outfits, isn't it? Also I really don't think many people admire Katie Price!

Beesandhoney123 · 14/11/2024 21:12

I don't admire celebrities. Still, they create work for PR and stylists etc.

Celebrity seems to mean media obsessed publicity hound.

Keir Stamer is all over the press always and no one describes him as a celebrity.
