Travelling to the Seychelles - how does a Seychelles SIM card work please?

I phoned Vodafone to ask about a data roaming packaged and the advisor told me that it would be truly extortionate and I'd be far better off buying a SIM card locally/ at the airport

But how does this work? I need to be contactable and need to have access to WhatsApp especially - so by popping in a local SIM card, will it just automatically all work?

Stupid question I know but it wasn't something I'd considered doing!

Your phone must accept the SIM (that your phone is not sim locked)

Otherwise, you get a local PAYG equivalent SIM, slot it in (and put your existing SIM somewhere safe

(Some phones accept two SIMs, but if so you will need to ensure that the UK SIM doesn’t try to use roaming - if it doubt take it out)

You will normally need to activate and load some credit to the overseas SIM

Once the local SIM is running, all your existing apps will still be there and will try to work

However - WhatsApp associates
with the phone number. It should work as is when you switch SIM, but if there needs to be a ‘verification’ you will need your UK SIM and would incur potential roaming charges during that verification
