Do you know Aberystwyth?

My DS is at Aberystwyth Uni. Just started. For months we’ve promised to come up and visit on ‘Venom’ weekend and go to the cinema to watch it with him.

So we have booked our accommodation and are looking forward to it…but now I can’t find a blooming cinema showing Venom, or even a cinema really.

Does anyone know the area enough to be able to advise?

Many thanks!

With the 20mph speed limit on many roads it will take you forever to drive anywhere in Wales - just spent a few days crawling around North Wales, honestly it is like being in a parade of tortoises.

😂

We’ve done the drive a few times and to be fair, it’s a stunning drive. I’m really looking forward to it.

Wow they still haven't built another cinema in Aber, the Commodore was the only cinema when I was a student 30 years ago. I did love the break in the middle of long films though so you could go to the toilet. Do they still do that?

That would suit my husband and I, but I think my son would be quite put out 😂

We’re coming up from past Bristol way, so we go over the bridge, up the A449 and then through Brecon. Wow. The red kites a few miles out.

You don’t really need a cinema. It’s so beautiful.

I will say, despite the lack of cinema, my son loves the University there. He said it’s so welcoming and he’s made lots of friends. He prefers it to the busy place we live. I hope that feeling lasts for him. He’s not homesick at all.

I'm glad he's enjoying it there. It's a nice university, I go to Arts Centre Cinema and Theatre occasionally. Been here 20 years and it definitely takes some getting used too but the scenery is indeed lovely.

Might have to just do this.
Thank you!

Why not go to Cardigan, it's closer?

I think we’re going to try that closer one on Nov 1st.

I would cry if a chain cinema came and the commodore went out of business. Waiting a couple of weeks for a film isn't a big deal and it is amazing to have two independent cinemas in the town.

fussychica · 18/10/2024 07:51

So pleased your DS loves being in Aber, chain cinema or no chain cinema! DS was there a decade ago and had a great time.

Cinema is called Commodore. To be honest wouldn't be hugely confident it would show Venom on the weekend it is released. It's only got one screen.

You might be able to catch a re-showing of Babar The Elephant at the Commodore Cinema though.....at least there was a long run of that some years ago when nothing else seemed to come to the cinema 😂

It's a lovely cinema but it's completely independent (afaik) so they don't get the big blockbuster movies the weekend of their release.

Flutterbycustard · 18/10/2024 14:19

@Hopingforno2in2024 Yeah I understand. What about one 30 minutes away 😉

Are you local? I often wonder if there are any other mumsnetters in this nowhere part of Wales.

I'm glad he's enjoying it. Dd is in year 2 now. She loves it there.

Aw that’s lovely. I’m glad your daughter is having a great time.

They might have met!! What a strange but nice thought!

I grew up in Aberystwyth @CeeJay81 and one day I will return. Just have to wait for my abusive parents to move/die sadly. It breaks my heart that I can't go home. I have so many happy memories in the Commodore :)

I'm so sorry to hear that about your parent🥰. Sounds very tough💐. I don't live in Aber but in a small local town near there. Go to Aber for Shopping, Cinema, Hospital appointments etc. My kids have grown up here going to the Commodore too. It hasn't changed.

Brombat · 18/10/2024 19:36

Aber has a lot more facilities than most towns its size.

My favourite place.

My DD is in her first term at Aber - she seems to be enjoying it too. Every time I speak to her she's either working or socialising!

Unfortunately her best friend is only there as a visitor for the semester but she assures me she's also made friends who will be there for the three years.

It is a beautiful drive - don't know about the person complaining about the 20mph limit - you go through so few towns and villages on the way that it's not a problem.
