Royal Mail Lost Letters- Have they been found?

I sent a letter by royal mail (1st Class, not tracked). This seems to have been lost, and I have started a claim (we are now 3 weeks in).

Has anyone have a lost letter found?

The letter included some very important items (passport) so I will now need to get a police report, and apply for a new passport etc etc. I am trying to figure out whether I should wait for the 30 days for the claim to end before reporting the crime to the police or whether there is any hope.

Any experiences of found letters like this would be welcomed.

PS: yes, I should have sent them tracked but I didn't.

If it was a current passport, I'd already have reported the loss - both to the police and the passport office. If it turns up, you'll have to apply (and pay) for a new one, but if it's lost, who knows who it might end up with it?

... and next time, send it special delivery!!

It's probably been stolen rather than lost. Passports (and similar important personal identity documents) should only ever be sent Special Delivery.

Wouldn't special delivery be equally liable to loss/being stolen? I didn't put in a letter box but went to the post office.

Yes! I Sent a present last Christmas to the recipients old address. Didn't realise they had moved

I filled out a form 6 weeks later and they sent me £10 worth of 1st class stamps as a refund.

A month later the parcel was returned to me

No because it's tracked every step of the way and handled differently. Posties are much more likely to get caught if they interfere with special delivery Mail.
It's quite easy to pinch non-tracked Mail if you're that way inclined.
