Anyone with covid now? Barking cough?

Milkandacookie · 11/10/2024 17:19

I feel awful. Anyone else?

I must have had Covid about 5 times now and I shielded initially too. I last had it in February.

I feel rough. I've started today barking when I cough. Anyone else had that?
I ache everywhere.

This is mainly a pity thread. In 2020 I was worried about hospitalisation. I'm not actively worried about that right now I just feel crap. And I have so much to do. Day 1 I still felt perky just run down (and I had been very run down) yesterday and today I've been in bed. I went down to make a cup of tea and was so weak I decided to go back to bed.

I am not enjoying this.

Everythings wrong at the moment (looking for a new job, overweight, kids being teens) that this feels like just another thing.

But anyone else with it this time and finding it hard?

My duaghter had it and just slept for a day/was a bit more asthma-ery for a few days. She only tested because she saw I had but she was already on the way up.

I am so run down. My counsellor had been wanting me to take time off anyway from work related stress. I'm wary of rushing back too soon but never had to get a Dr's note before.

Anyone else?

It is not explicit in your post, but do you have Covid. As in positively tested for it?

I only ask because you will see on other threads and may have read elsewhere that there is a (non-covid) cough going around that lasts a while. It is a bacteria strain that pre-dates covid and has been coming and going for years. Nothing to be concerned about but it can turn to pneumonia without anti-biotics and annoyingly lasts longer than normal. I had it in 2019 (11 weeks) and had it again last month (3 weeks).

On the plus side I watched Netflix while I recovered and bounced back big time.

CMOTDibbler · 11/10/2024 17:54

Yup. I only tested as it is going through DHs office and I didn't want to spread it around myself. I feel a bit grotty, no temperature, but a lovely cough

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 11/10/2024 17:56

I have just got over this. Never tested but fairly certain i had it, including a barking cough!

Took me three weeks to get over it. Hope you get well soon.

Oh sorry yes did two tests to make sure!!

Oh I wasn't worrying about chest infections initially but forgot I was unwell for several months breathless/difficulties walking until they realised it was a lingering chest infection just a couple of years ago. I don't want another one 😬😬😬.
It was months before I got treated too (hospital xray as they thought I had dvt after doing blood tests as they thought it was because I'm fat and unfit 🙄)

@CMOTDibbler that does sound like kine it's just where I'm run down already it's hit me hard with exhaustion and aches as well. Hope yours doesn't get worse.

It is almost like whne my kids have croup it's weird. I don't remember this before.

@DeltaAlphaDelta79 3 weeks!!! Gosh. Did you need to see a dr? We're you off work that long? Sounds similar.

I've cancelled work til wed but feel so rubbish I really need to get better.

I had an awful barking cough too recently. I didn't test for covid but did wonder if I'd had it as the cough was unusual. I thought I might have whooping cough at one point but it only lasted a couple of days.

Milkandacookie · 11/10/2024 18:18

Ah could have been. I only tested as I have tests and get a bit anxious about my health as I've got asthma/done recover well when ill and wanted to legitamly mly say why I'm off work!

I think 90% of the country isn't testing /we don't need to so I guess lots of people will be like my duaghter and feel rough for a couple of days and that's it.

I had whopping cough 15yeara ago and it is almost like that.

I wfh and my boss is pretty understanding and flexible, so i had the odd hour off here and there when it got too much, but no actual time off. I probably would have gone sick if i had been going to work, there was a few days i felt unsafe to drive.

I didn't see a Dr, i wouldnt anyway for something like that. I felt ill, but not that ill. I did have a lot of lemsip tho, which i only take if i am really crap!

Milkandacookie · 11/10/2024 18:51

Ah so more of a run down/tired for 3 weeks than "off work ill for 3 weeks" which I think my mind had slept to!

I couldn't drive or go into work today.

Yeah thats about it. I think i finished at lunchtime one day, but other than that it was a few days of a longer lunch break, later start or early finish, but my job often has days where i start early, finish late or work through lunch with no overtime so its swings and roundabouts. The general crap feeling was about 4-6 days but the cough was about 3 weeks.

Milkandacookie · 11/10/2024 18:56

Thanks I wonder if I'll follow that pattern. I certainly don't want to be off 3 weeks but work is full on and I can't go back if I'm not functioning.

(which is my other issue. I so need a job where I can wfh if I'm having a tired day anyway never mind being ill)

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 11/10/2024 18:59

Fingers crossed for you! I won't ever go back full time in a work place for the reasons above, among others!

EmeraldRoulette · 11/10/2024 19:08

I had it last week. I was going to agree with you about the barking cough but now you say it’s like whooping cough - mine wasn’t anything like that bad. Gone in a few days. Definitely the barking noise but not the whooping sound. Do you need a steroid inhaler? Are you short of breath?

I tested positive on Friday last week. I then got a negative test on Sunday and felt better but then Monday and Tuesday was feverish and coughing again. I would say I have been feeling virusy for most of the week - but the main problem now is I cannot get my brain to work at all!

I was working at home yesterday and today. I had to triple check everything because my brain is soooo slow. It’s my first time with it so I suppose I’ve got off lightly. I hope you feel better soon.

I don’t know how long it takes for brain power to normalise but I hope it’s quick. I get really bad SAD so I’m a tad confused about how that is contributing - though today has been very sunny.

Wish you better asap. 💐

Milkandacookie · 11/10/2024 20:00

I'm only a few days in and feeling unbelievably sorry for myself (really low maybe just because I'm ill?) but realistically it probably is the same as whopping cough. That lasted forever
I'm not "whooping" but I bark and it's uncomfortable and then have to catch my breath.

I have inhalers and I've upped them (pink one and added the blue one in) but im not feeling like I "can't breath" like with asthma or I'd be more worried. I'm just exhausted and achy ribs and tired.

I teach adults and I really really need my brian to be working when I so can't go back if I'm not better.

I am worried I'll need to get a GPS note.

I also need a different job. I really want a different job but my head isn't clear enough to try and untangle that mess.

Thanks for the sympathy everyone. I think I may end up being off linger just because I can't wfh/ work slowly.

I hate this.

I had Covid 3 weeks ago, positive test ( I’m HCP so still have access to free tests) I have to admit that it was the worst case so far. I’ve had it every year but very mild. It was more like mild flu and I was left with a bit of vertigo and very slight chesty cough.
Bar a little fatigue I’m fully recovered.

Milkandacookie · 11/10/2024 20:22

Yay glad you're better. I so thought it would be milder for most people by now.

I am concerned as I was already close to burnout and so any fatigue on top of that will feel rubbish when I'm better.

I do realise I'm not at deaths door or seriously ill. I've just been in bed 2 days and am grumpy.

I've got it and a chest infection for the second time. I didn't realise how bad I was until my cleaner came in a few days ago and found me curled up on the floor crying. I'm still so embarrassed.

I feel your pain. I found it really frustrating having had very mild symptoms with previous infections.

Milkandacookie · 13/10/2024 22:35

So I've managed to be up and about for apart of today but went to bed at 8 just exhausted.

I have no idea what I do about work this week. I've already said no to Monday and Tuesday but I'd need a serious boost of energy to do the rest of the week. O the flip side not going in brews more problems for me in the long run.

Milkandacookie · 19/10/2024 21:43

So coming back to my thread in self pity!

I had this week off so 1.5 weeks off now.

I'm not really "ill" anymore but I am compeltely exhausted. Literally spent most of the day in bed still.

Get up make a cup of tea, think I'll sit on the sofa and then afrer a bit go back to bed.

I don't know whether to try and push through with work (people facing so can't wfh) as already taken 1.5 weeks off or carry on doing nothing.

I'm so fed up with it all. I'm still getting headaches, I'm exhausted and so wish I had a different job!
