I think I know what the majority will say but do you go into work with a cold?! Please give me some tough love to get me through the next couple of work days with the lurgy!

We wfh so it doesn’t spread. Some can get pneumonia from a virus that doesn’t affect someone else that much.

I do personally. At a former job, I was once dismissed from my role due to 15 days of disability-related absences over a three year period.

I am terrified of being treated in the same way again, so I would absolutely be working with a cold.

Do you have flexi time or a work from home arrangement to make things a little easier for you?

Edit: Just realised this is an old thread 🫣

Yes, of course. Colds are annoying, but trivial. We should all do so, barring jobs with the very vulnerable (eg a nurse on ICU).

Renovationhell · 04/02/2025 17:01

Yes. Don’t go in don’t get paid so no choice.

susiedaisy1912 · 04/02/2025 17:10

Sometimes, it all depends on what type of cold I have, some are just mild colds, others are really heavy colds and I feel so ill that I'd probably make mistakes at work. I can't afford to do that as we deal with blood samples from patients. For me it's not about being a hero and soldiering on it's about being well enough to do my job properly.

lollydu · 04/02/2025 19:14

No I don't as I have the ability to work from home. I don't see the point in spreading germs if I don't have to. Pre covid yes I would have if I was feeling well enough to work.

RachelLikesTea · 04/02/2025 19:16

Yes, absolutely except when I worked in a clinical environment and it was an absolute no. Cold & Flu tablets usually help to get me through the days with a cold.

Surroundedbyfools · 04/02/2025 19:35

Yes. I have 2 toddlers so I have a new cold every other week atm plus my boss would go off her rocker if I called in with the cold. Also sadly my days in work r the only time I get to leave the house alone so I’m less keen to phone in lol

StormingNorman · 04/02/2025 19:37

Yes. If they want me to stay home for the benefit of other people, they need to pay me sick leave and fuck off the Bradford Factor (or whatever it’s called).

Yes I do but we have a very draconian policy at work. Years ago I had an employer who sent anyone who had a cold home as they didn't want it to spread through the office. There was hardly any sick leave ever taken as you weren't constantly picking things up at work.

I was that employer. No-one ever swung the lead and general health was excellent.

For those of you who do go in, what do you dose up with if you are feeling really horrible?
