Cutlery drawer order

I saw a post on Facebook recently where a poster showed a photo of a cutlery tray from a holiday cottage, and was having trouble resisting rearranging it.

Other than it being a bit untidy I couldn’t see what was wrong with it, and I wasn’t alone.

Many posters, however, were adamant that the cutlery was in the wrong order, and that only knife, fork, spoon could be correct.

I had a look at my own cutlery tray and it turns out that it complies to this rule.
I have no idea how.

Is a set order a ‘thing’?

Those doing spoon, fork knife, ( like me) are you left- handed (like me). A friend stayed with me while she was having building work done and she said my cutlery drawer was arranged "left-handed".

Yes! DH and I are both lefties and it's organised exactly in that order.

I can't be bothered with all that. I just chuck them in

TillyKister · 08/10/2024 21:27

It's got to be knife, fork, spoon. There's no other way 😁

Same here 😬. I was too nervous to admit it, so I was waiting for a kindred spirit 😁!

Df always swaps our knives and forks over when he comes to stay. It amuses me.

mathanxiety · 08/10/2024 21:36

Knives, dinner forks, dessert forks topping and tailing with dessert spoons and teaspoons, and finally soup spoons.

It's always knife fork spoon. It's the law.

Apparently, this was the order cutlery had to be laid out for kit inspection in the Army.

I blame National Service.

Surely fork, knife, spoon so that you go left to right ready to lay the table?

Or have I been doing this wrong all my life? 😁

But, but, but...
If you lay the table properly, the spoon is inside the knife, so it would be fork, spoon, knife.

Which opens a whole other can of etiquette worms!

Spoon fork knife

Scutterbug · 08/10/2024 21:48

Mine has to go, from left to right, fork, spoon, knife. Like how they are laud at the table.

Knives, dinner forks, dessert forks topping and tailing with dessert spoons and teaspoons, and finally soup spoons.

Oh god, flashback to childhood and the top and tailing of soup spoons and dessert spoons, dinner forks and dessert forks, which all had to nestle inside each other just so. Easy to trace the rebellious origins of the satsuma crate free-for-all!

Tray is mostly horizontal. imagine the following as though you are looking down at the drawer:

Soup spoons
Dessert spoons
Forks
Knives
Tea strainers, bag clips, straws, travel cutlery.

There are two compartments to the right, one contains teaspoons, one has oddments of plastic cutlery left from the toddler years (great for packed lunch use) and medicine spoons.

FussyPud · 08/10/2024 22:15

This is the tray.

I've never seen that order. Mine - same as my mum's, and presumably her mum's - is spoons (tea, dessert and soup), forks, knives. All the others I've encountered have been the same.

Knife, fork, spoon and the small section for tea spoons 😁

This is what I do but I have no idea why.

Vettrianofan · 09/10/2024 07:27

Forks, knives then spoons. Anything else is wrong. Completely and utterly wrong. Off to the gallows with ye!

NO.

Knives at one side, spoons at the other and forks in the middle.

Then the bottom bit has 2 slots one with 'special' cutlery, fish knives, steak knives metal chopsticks.

The other has teaspoons and cake forks.

DreamSpaceships · 13/01/2025 07:14

I do spoon, fork, knife as otherwise the knife and fork are the wrong way round for eating with (and spoon in the middle would just feel wrong). Teaspoons and cake forks in the little section. Chopsticks and random implements to the left. Kids’ cutlery to the right

HappyDane · 08/10/2024 19:01

I do spoon, fork, knife!

Crazy dude!

Tarkan · 13/01/2025 18:03

I have this from Joseph Joseph with the knife holder beside it. Saves so much space in the drawer.

Spoons closest to the front (dessert spoons one way and soup spoons the other way), then forks then knives and teaspoons furthest away. It does have little pictures on it to show what goes where.
