I forgot to pay for my train

Commuting to work. I was half asleep and totally forgot to pay using the app. App won’t let me buy a ticket now. I’m half dithering over jumping out at the next stop, I’ve googled and it says I’ll have to pay £100+.

Do they take pity if it’s a genuine accident? I came off long term meds last week, I’m more forgetful than normal and now panicking I’m going to have to (quite rightly, I guess) pay a huge fine for making a mistake.

I’m not going to jump off; was just panicking. Wouldn’t be realistic, I’d be in the middle of nowhere and have to try and get an Uber during rush hour.

Will the app let you buy an anytime single? They should be available all the time

Approach the ticket person before they ask you for your ticket. Explain you didn’t have time to buy a ticket before boarding. Just ask to buy one now.

If you can show your history of usually paying for tickets on the app, I’d show her and just say it was a genuine mistake. Good luck - it’s a horrible feeling isn’t it!

Anytime return worked thank God. Was saying on the app it wouldn’t, but she hasn’t questioned it. She looks like she’d be nice about it. Anyway that’s a great start to the morning, I feel like a lemon because my hands are shaking.

Sorry but I've never seen a forgiving ticket inspector.

I've done this more than once, and once when I did it the Trainline app wouldn't work!!! I was bricking it, but it all ended up fine

If the next train is the same price/ticket type can you buy a ticket for that one in the app? As long as you have paid for an appropriate ticket e.g. peak return, then I think they should accept it. Doesn't work for advance singles but should be ok for other ticket types.
