My 6yo has just started P2 (in NI) he is diagnosed with ASD. We are in the process of applying for a statement (same as an EHCP). We are hoping for a 1:1.
He's struggles academically and socially at school. It's a lovely small school with a mixed P1/P2 class of 15. They have been great at trying to help him as much as possible. He gets to do sensory circuits, attention autism, a social skills program etc
He is being grouped with the P1s this year mostly for phonics etc. I know this should help him but am worried if it will leave him having a big leap next year into P3? I think he is also starting to pick up on being singled out sometimes.
He is friends with one of the P2 boys and hasn't really connected with any of the P1s yet.
How much should a child struggle before you think of a specialist school? The one closest to us is pretty big and am worried it would be really overwhelming too.
Any advice for experience of this?
