Johnnie Walker retiring from Radio 2

Ah, he’s announced he’s hanging up his headphones at the end of the month. Sad

Sounds of the Seventies is my favourite Radio 2 show, such a perfect Sunday afternoon soundtrack in our house. Whispering Bob Harris is taking over, and I’m okay with that but still sad about Johnnie.

I'm listening to his last ever show now. His drive time show 24 years ago helped me through a difficult time.

Freebird is making me well up.

Listening too. Sad

the80sweregreat · 27/10/2024 16:58

Oh, just seen it's Bob Harris taking over

AuntieMarys · 27/10/2024 16:58

Paddy does the Sunday morning show.
I don't mind him tbh , but I'm not a regular listener to radio 2 at weekends so I only might catch a bit of his show now and again

Johnnie Walker always made me feel that he was talking to each individual listener personally. His rapport with Sally Traffic on the drive time show was brilliant.

Sourisblanche · 27/10/2024 17:30

I remember when Jonny said he was getting married and lots of people contacted the show and said ‘are you marrying Sally Traffic!’

He got a bit irritated in the end - or at least as irritated as he could possibly be for such a lovely man - and said no I’m marrying TiggySmile

I loved his voice ❤️ I used to listen to him on Radio Caroline in the 1960s. His 'Kiss in the car' was the highlight of my evenings Grin

I miss him as well. I used to love the Janet and John stories on my way to work.

It's sad that true professionals like JW are retiring and being replaced by presenters rather than DJs.

What was the kiss in the car feature?

He played a record and invited listeners who were in their cars to kiss for as long as the music lasted. He used to send a certificate to couples who said they did it!
