A defence of 'Freebies'

The Prime Minister and Ministers should go to the main Social Events of the year. They should in my view go to Wimbledon, British Grand Prix, Royal Ascot and the championships of sports. Music events like Last Night of the Proms or Taylor Swift as well.
I want them to go and experience what these mean in different ways. They are the peak of various industries that are very important to our economy and employ many people that either perform or work behind the scenes making it all happen.
They should not be expected to pay for themselves they should treat it as work as well as enjoying the event.
Is this a fair argument of mine?

Are you really this bored?

SometimesCalmPerson · 06/10/2024 14:43

No

Ficklebricks · 06/10/2024 14:45

I'd rather they get on with the important business of running the country.

For me the freebies aren’t the issue, it’s who has given them the freebies.

eg Gucci sends kier a suit and his wife a dress because they know them being seen in it will be good for their brand - fine, it’s a perk, it’s clear what Gucci are getting in return and it doesn’t affect the country/policy etc.

A huge gambling company giving kier and other mps Taylor swift tickets - why? What do they want in return?

I agree, OP. I also think they should wear British and ethical brands if they choose and I don’t care if they are gifted as long as everything is declared. I really like that Victoria Starmer and Angela Rayner wear Me&Em, for example. If they pay for it fine but if they don’t I’m not really that bothered tbh. As long as everything is transparent, their values are not compromised by whatever they are gifted and who is gifting it and they’re not jizzing taxpayers money on hideous wallpaper a la Boris then I think they should have an afternoon at Wimbledon. Events like that are culturally important, they should be part of them.

Would you expect then that they get:

Paid for working overtime
Get time off in lieu
Not be allowed to consume alcohol
Claim transportation costs/meal expenses etc?

Sounds like a nice gig working for you.

Clothes. British. So Savile Row for the man. Perhaps a different suit from two or three firms eg Huntsman, Kilgore etc. For her some loans from British designers like Diana or poss Kate Middleton got. These are loans but can be bought at cost maybe. Shoes from eg Lobb. Nothing from any companies eg gambling, alcohol, Ticketmaster, fossil fuels etc. The RF get free stuff via the Royal Warrants so perhaps certain items from that list. No trips abroad to oligarchs villas. No private jets/helicopters. Maybe Wimbledon, maybe concert tickets if guest of the artist. Happy for them to be seen on the world stage well dressed but with that all the caveats we have mentioned
