Family car around £12k

Hello, does anyone have recommendations for a family car around the 12k mark? We're looking for petrol and under 50k miles if possible. Not concerned about looks, just something reliable.

All help appreciated!

We have a Vauxhall Grandland X as our big family car and would recommend that! We’ve had ours a few years and had no real issues with it, plenty of boot space for pram, plenty of space inside to sit. I’m sure you could get a second hand one probably 2020 plate for about 12k? X

I know you said petrol, but I just bought a Tesla model 3, 2020 plate for £13k and it’s absolutely brilliant. Great family car, the kids love the games and the fact the car can fart on demand… we can watch Netflix on the big screen as well! Handy if you’re waiting for them in their clubs.

Civic mk10 1.5l if you push the budget a tiny bit,
My folks have one, great engine, well built and feels like it’ll run forever. Not the best looks wise but fairly roomy inside, if a little low to the ground.

Mg zs. Great value, really spacious, 7 year guarantee.
Recently got a three year old with 23k miles for 12k.

Kia Sportage, very reliable and decent safety etc. Feels massive inside. I got one at 53k for 11300.
I looked at all the medium SUV's because I like that shape.
I had a qashqai previously and loved it but not as reliable as the Kia.
Also liked the Susuki Vitara around that budget.

I'm having a look at all these, thanks for the suggestions. Some of the ones I've seen with low miles seem to be slightly older, eg 2018. Should I be looking at newer cars or does the lower mileage make up for the older reg year?

I paid 8k for my top of the range 18m old Aygo, it's 10 now with under 21000 on the clock. I love it.

ilovebagpuss · 06/10/2024 12:19

My sportage is 2017 and immaculate inside and has all the ususal sat nav and bluetooth bells and whistles with a screen.
It's not as top end inside as some of the other makes where you can get a more recent year like the Vauxhall Mokka or the Peugeot 2008 but I wanted a reliable chunky car so wasn't fussed about the year.

I know you said petrol too - and I know NOTHING about cars - but we got a Toyota Yaris Hybrid for £12000 ish. 3 years ago. 2019 plate. Petrol and electric but you don't have to charge it.

Was around 21000 on the clock.

Automatic- had been driving a manual for almost 30 years and I have been converted Grin

It's the first car I've ever had where I don't worry about it breaking down / something going wrong!
