Strange coincidences

KimberleyClark · 06/10/2024 10:46

I regularly buy books from charity shops. My DH started reading one and pointed out to me there is a name written on the flyleaf - my first name and my maiden surname. My first name is a very ordinary one that has not been popular since the 60s/70s. My maiden surname is very common think Jones or Williams. The handwriting even looks similar to mine!

Any other strange coincidences?

DD2 lived in a house in London last year. Her address was 23 (name of road). when we were first dating in the mid 1980s, DH and I lived at 22 (name of road) - right over the road!

So your kid lived in a road named the same as a road you and her dad lived in?

Unless it was completely obscure like Egg Pie Lane what's the coincidence?

VictoryOrDeath · 06/10/2024 14:40

@catin8oots, it was the same road.

I won a second hand Paula Yates autobiography a few months ago. Written inside was Dear(my name) Happy Christmas 95 love from Simon. Strange that the original owner had the same name as me which isn't a common name 😱

Dc1 17/6
Dc2 6/3
Dc3 3/11
Dc4. 31/1...

The numbers move up one space with each subsequent birthday.

They don't though?

Did the family tree a few years ago and discovered that my aunt lived in the same house in London as had been lived in by her great grandmother.

Dontcallmescarface · 06/10/2024 15:05

Two that stand out for me.
The 1st was when we were clearing out my parents home after their deaths in 2020. My dad kept every single log book of every car he owned ( not the part you send off but the rest), and in 1971 he bought a car ( from a garage), which was owned by a man he didn't know. It turns out that man ended up being my (now ex), FiL.

The 2nd was me and DP were having a weekend away and when we got to the room there was a hand written note from the cleaner welcoming us. That cleaner had the same name as my DD. The name is a very unusual one. Even the handwriting was the same.

I have met the same family on two different holidays in different countries about 10 years apart
We're from opposite ends of the UK too

Started reading a series of books a while back….I’d been reading a while when I started to realise that all the lead characters shared names with family….DH, SIL, DH’s ExW…relatively unusual combination of names so it felt quite amusing. The main character’s daughter was born on my birthday, and then gave her car the same rather unusual name I called mine…felt a bit weird then tbh!

I like this story. I wonder if the author's someone you once knew?

I'm from the north and I went to a professional event in London. Person running event went to my school and had same teachers for our subject that we were discussing, just 3-4 years apart!

This is quite a compliment to your teachers!

They don't? Or am I not seeing it? Unless it's a typo and DC4 was born on the 11th?

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 06/10/2024 15:18

A close friend I have known for about 25 years through work recently did her ancestry & it's showed that we are 3rd cousins. We were able to track the family connection from trees we had done. Both from different areas of the country.

Lampzade · 06/10/2024 15:21

I have moved seven times in the last twenty years. The areas I have moved to all start with a C or K

Do they? Please explain, I'm really trying to understand.

17/6 the 6 moves to become 6/3 then the 3 moves one place to become 3/11 then the 1 moves up one place to become 31/1. Following the pattern the next child would be born on 11/?.

I actually started to think that too….but no. She does write under a pseudonym for some of her books and under her real name for others in a different genre. I’ve never met anyone using either name! In the little bio of her that’s included in her books it says that she was brought up and still lives at the other end of the country from me, yet obscure places in the city that I live in pop up in a few of her books. It feels like I should know her but I don’t!

I bought a book at. Charity shop when I was at uni. After uni we moved about 100miles away.

I picked it up after living here for about 12 years and realised there was a library sticker .. from the school my oldest was then at.

catlesslady · 06/10/2024 15:37

When we had our DC, DH and I moved to a very small town near where his family live. A new family moved in across the road a year or so later. The Dad was someone I was friends with an university and his wife's family also lived nearby. Neither of us had any previous link to this small town and it was not near the city we were at University in etc.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/10/2024 16:09

My DD has an unusual first name/surname combo. Her surname is Indian Christian and very common and her first name is Islamic and less common, the sort of name that people sometimes say they have a friend or cousin by that name but that you don't often meet in person. While the DC were growing up I used to Google them occasionally just to check what was out there about them. DS has literally thousands of people with the same name as him because his first name is one of about 25 male first names used in DH's heritage and the surname is also very common. DD, on the other hand, has only one person in the whole world with the same first name and surname, albeit with a slightly differently spelling.

So because I checked every year or so, I have watched this stranger with her name go through American high school, into university and on to a career. I'm not stalking exactly, just reading the toplines of the search results. It feels quite strange. I often feel the urge to ask her how she ended up with the name combo that she did, perhaps she was named after a family friend or something.

My brother met a beautiful woman in Switzerland. He was with his friends and she with hers so they mostly chatted in the company of others.

There was a instant strong connection, love at first sight you might say.

On his last day he was able to say goodbye to her when they were alone and exchanged numbers as he was leaving a few days before she was.

She was living in London the same as him and they were somewhat shocked to discover that she lived in the same apartment block as he did but two floors below him! They'd both lived there approximately a year each and had never seen each other.

They got married.

Garlicbest · 06/10/2024 16:46

Aw, what a sweet story, @Attelina!

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar, my name's unusual - I've got a whole weird tale about that but, sticking to the less-weird one similar to yours, I do sometimes google to see if I have any name twins. There were five of us on Facebook, so I messaged them. One replied that we should friend each other 🙂 She's in America and nothing like me, but it's great to see her updates - I almost feel like I do know her by now!

Its absolutely hilarious when one of us comments on the other's posts; all the other friends going "Huh? Whut??!"

Am I missing something?

I guess it is that they are all numbers.

Spookily my date of birth is all numbers too.😱

How lovely ❤️

Sounds like the plot to a film.

The street I grew up on is my first name.

My mum's initials and mine are the same (first, middle, last).

Also my mums name and surname said quickly sound like her favourite hobby. I always found that funny.

Norugratsatall · 07/10/2024 09:04

@catin8oots London is huge! It was the same road, opposite one another. Of course it's a bloody coincidence!
