Adult ds is going to florida. The night he lands there's a hurricane. I really don't want him to go .

If there's going to be a hurricane the flights will be grounded.

Talipesmum · 06/10/2024 09:39

They’re v used to hurricanes there. Plane won’t land / fly if there’s a problem.

Fallingup2024 · 06/10/2024 10:07

Really hope so

He’s an adult, so whether you want him to go or not is irrelevant. You’re entitled to feel how you feel, however.

MumChp · 06/10/2024 10:09

Tell him?

lifeturnsonadime · 06/10/2024 10:10

He'll be fine, I flew into Mexico just before landfall of Hurricane Beryl earlier this year.

They know what they are doing. He won't fly if it is a risk and the hotel / government are used to hurricanes and will give appropriate safety advice.

Thank you . Yeah logically I'm sure he will be ok. It just worries me.

That's understandable. If he cancels he will lose his money.

They take all precautions, is he staying in Orlando or on the coast?

They track hurricanes really well. We were about 30 miles from where it hit, they evacuated hotels in the next resort for a period to keep people safe, we had the windows boarded and were told to stay in the room until the all clear was given. The locals have to deal with these events up to 4-5 times a year and they clear up so so fast. So while it's not ideal unless he takes risks he will be completely fine.

This is Hurriance Milton so we are already on name 13 in this storm season alone and 2 have been pretty nasty hutricanes

hey are used to it yes flights may be delayed and yes he may have a boring couple of days but it is a fairly normal occurrence

Noseybookworm · 06/10/2024 10:39

They are used to hurricanes in Florida. Flights will be cancelled or diverted if it's dangerous. He will be fine.

DoNOTShakeItOff · 06/10/2024 12:05

I follow extreme weather and this hurricane headed for Florida is expected to be the worst one yet with 20ft storm surge (flooding) for up to 80 miles inland. It's not been reported in the UK quite how catastrophic Hurricane Helene was last week. North Carolina was all but wiped out, as was many parts of the Florida Panhandle.
This storm is set to become even worse.

I'm not trying to scare you intentionally OP, I'm saying this to prepare your DS for the very large possibility that his flight will be cancelled and he'll be staying safe in the UK (or wherever he's flying from).

I strongly advise following meteorologist Ryan Hall Y'all on YouTube. His X (Twitter) page is showing up to date info on this hurricane

We were in Florida when hurricane Jeane hit. We were staying in a rented villa. We went into a local restaurant once we knew it was coming to ask advice, is there something we should do etc, turns out yes, put the pool furniture in the pool ( to stop it flying through the window) . Also buy batteries and water. We were staying in Orlando.
We were able to watch a bit on tv before the power went out and stayed out for 24 hours. Also there was a curfew, only emergency workers were allowed out. It was a little bit scary but an experience I will always remember and as people have said people are used to it and take precautions. Everything was shut including airports and Disney.
I did take some fabulous photos (through a window obviously) .

Is he going anywhere near Tampa? If so I'd encourage him to check his travel insurance. Hurricane Milton is currently Cat 5 and looking enormously damaging

Yes he was . The air port is closed so he's not going.
