The casual things that wealthy people take for granted

Inspired by a thread that’s gone totally off topic….where someone suggested a £400 watch was cheap.

What’s the most casual (even accidental) brag you’ve ever heard a wealthy person say?

I can start as I know someone who celebrated a big birthday recently and is an absolutely lovely person but during their party (in the wonderful house) they said “oh! Here comes the string quartet. I had completely forgotten about them!”

The privilege is staggering. MOST people can’t afford David Lloyd membership.

Speak for yourself. Much nicer clubs around, I wouldn't want to join DL.

You should get out more.

Darling you’re here as well so another point not well made!

WandaFishy99 · 05/10/2024 20:55

@Disappearedwife

You can always tell who grew up either poor or feeling underprivileged in some way.
Massive chip on their shoulder turns them into adults who are obsessed with money and making sure people know they like to splash the cash.

Feeling cold so whacking the heating up, rather than putting more clothes on.

I do this though and I'm poor af 😂 (although reasons like this could be why)

I’ve just got back from Argos darling. Got myself a nice cheap watch.

Can you understand that? know how you struggle.

Covidwoes · 05/10/2024 21:01

The "£400 is cheap for a watch" brigade are absolutely deluded. My recent watch was £25. Somebody telling me £400 isn't a lot for a watch needs to spend some time at a food bank!

Enjoy your watch :)

You poor thing, we had to let the weekend nanny go once that was a bleak year.

That's nothing, we had to burn the Chippendale to keep warm .

Manypaws · 05/10/2024 21:04

Why can't people spend their money in they way they want?

It's not difficult to work out that £400 is a lot of money for some and small change for others

It’s all relative. On the watch price scale, £400 is very cheap when the most expensive cost 31million. I’ve spent plenty of time at food banks but I also know there are some really expensive watches out there.

They can, and do. There's nothing wrong with that. However, bragging or humblebragging about it is vulgar.

Anyone else jealous of the Volvo? Any takers?

“How old is your car ?”

would be the more relevant question as I thought new cars would be what casual wealthy take for granted. 😁

Covidwoes · 05/10/2024 21:13

@Fevertreelover Still, to me, £400 for a watch is extortionate.

Manypaws · 05/10/2024 21:15

@Covidwoes And to others it isn't

Covidwoes · 05/10/2024 21:20

@Manypaws, those people must earn an absolute fortune, and to say it isn't expensive when there are children coming to school hungry, is just crass. I don't care if someone has a £400 watch, but they shouldn't brag about it. It's tasteless. I have a friend who is wealthy, but she wouldn't dream of saying something like a £400 watch is cheap, as she knows it's not a nice thing to say in front of people for whom £400 would be a hell of a lot of money.

Knowing that if you don't work terribly hard at school that mum and dad will sort you out somehow

Having your exact choice of uni course because you'll fit in there and don't have to worry about travelling, rent, student loans or working and studying at the same time

Taking your time going travelling because you don't need to get straight to work

Doing charity work / internships because you can afford to work for no pay

Living virtuous, green, sustainable lives because you can afford to

Following an unusual diet and spending lots of time on your health and wellbeing

Overpaying your mortgage

Redecorating / restyling your home regularly

Replacing things before they're worn out

This is the most accurate and considered answer.

Manypaws · 05/10/2024 21:23

Bragging on any sort is crass. But with your theory of comparing children going school hungry then everything bar having the bare minimum would be crass

QuestionableMouse · 05/10/2024 21:25

GivingitToGod · 05/10/2024 19:04

You often find (not always) that those with alot of money are extremely cautious at spending it

Oh she liked spending money. Just not on my wages.

Calliopespa · 05/10/2024 21:25

Fevertreelover · 05/10/2024 12:48

£k is cheap. Her is my favourite watch of the moment and its 2.6m😱

https://www.patek.com/en/collection/grand-complications/5260-1455R-001

Gosh! Costs so much and looks so cheap!

Manypaws · 05/10/2024 21:26

That watch is awful

Chateauneufdu · 05/10/2024 21:29

swimlyn · 05/10/2024 17:47

ODFOD.

Is it a comprehension thing or genuinely naivety?

Covidwoes · 05/10/2024 21:30

I mean bragging @Manypaws. Anyone who says £400 is cheap for a watch is bragging.
I'm sorry, but they are. It's not a nice thing to say.

Manypaws · 05/10/2024 21:31

It's not bragging, it's an opinion

Manypaws · 05/10/2024 21:36

I wonder how many people will buy that bloody awful watch?

Choosingbetweenthousandsofmediocresandwiches · 05/10/2024 21:43

Quite funny today, tutoring one of my students, she’s almost 13, lovely girl, very wealthy. She was telling me all about her amazing sounding summer holidays..Ireland, London, Poland, Santorini…twice 🤷🏻‍♀️When she said they were due to go to the Almalfi coast but that there were no good hotels, so didn’t bother 😂
