Vancouver or Kuala Lumpur

I have a choice of a week next summer of one of these places.

Any advice?

I’d probably do Kuala Lumpur as it’s more exotic and I’ve been to Vancouver.

vancouver is lovely, it’s a beautiful walk along the bay, you can go whale watching over to Vancouver island. The restaurants were really good and I’d go happily go back but I always like visiting new places.

Kuala Lumpur!

We all have different opinions. But I'll share my own in case it's any good.

I thought that Vancouver was a bit boring

keyboardjam · 03/10/2024 14:28

Thanks 😊

To add, I love pottering around on public transport, sightseeing, nice bars and restaurants. Nothing too strenuous (bad back). I like food and water to be safe and no risk of upset stomach.

KL looks quite a bit cheaper when you get there?

I definitely thought that Vancouver was a bit dull.

I mean there'll be great shows and live music to see.

But as a place, it's just a bit bland in my opinion.

CrunchySnow · 03/10/2024 14:56

Having been to both, I'd pick Vancouver everytime. Love the city with the mountains in the background. Lots of lovely areas to explore. I found KL a bit anticlimactic.

Givemethesun · 03/10/2024 15:31

LOVE KL - just returned from there with DH and Dc (2). We were only there 3 days though and then went to langkawi for the rest of the trip (would also recommend). Plenty of malls, parks, food courts, bars. Some lovely hotels. KL would definitly get my vote, but I would always chose Asian over Vancouver. PS food is so cheap when you’re there. 80p for a main meal

merrymelodies · 03/10/2024 15:41

I live in Vancouver and although it's beautiful, with lots of outdoor activities (if that's your thing), there are many homeless people and drug addicts on the streets. COL is through the roof and there's a lot of crime. It's changed a great deal, sadly.

IOSTT · 03/10/2024 15:48

Would check if that’s the rainy season in KL, although it gets rain year round. Not sure there’d be enough to do for a whole week.

Killerqueenie · 03/10/2024 16:55

I absolutely loved Vancouver. We spent a whole day in Stanley park riding bikes that we hired. If you hire a car, you can take the ferry over to Vancouver Island, or head out of the city to see the beautiful mountains. We went on a driving holiday, but the drive from Vancouver to Whistler was breathtaking.

In Vancouver itself, there is lots to do and loads of lovely restaurants. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Never been to Kuala Lumpur, so can't comment.

KL is not the best place to visit in Malaysia. Essentially a hot sticky busy Asian capital with too much traffic and a disjointed public transport system.

If you go try to get a couple of day trips out, say to Batu caves, but again traffic is the problem. Penang, Langkawi or even Singapore (great public transport) are better options.

keyboardjam · 03/10/2024 19:48

Thank you all. @Killerqueenie when did you go to Vancouver? Did you encounter any issues with homelessness and drugs?

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 03/10/2024 19:59

Vancouver. Unless I can leave KL immediately and go straight to Singapore

Sidebeforeself · 03/10/2024 20:03

Vancouver is fab. Never been to KL but I cant imagine a place more different to Vancouver! Any reason why those two?

I didnt experience any problem with drug users/homeless people.Saw a lot of them of course, like in many. Cities but they didnt cause me any problems.

LivelyGoldOrca · 03/10/2024 20:06

kl was great but stifling hot. I would only go again if I could do what we did last time and nip out to the coasts…

vancouver is bloody gorgeous and in the summer the weather is so much fresher as NOT like being in an outdoor sauna

keyboardjam · 03/10/2024 20:07

@Sidebeforeself needs to be 1 flight from both Heathrow and Auckland and somewhere we haven't been before and it's narrowed down to these two.

Ooh Singapore is so lovely.

You narrowed it down to two very opposing choices!

Nannyoggapple · 03/10/2024 20:11

Have you been to Singapore?

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 03/10/2024 20:12

Take it you've been to Singapore?

HotCrossBunplease · 03/10/2024 20:14

I imagine Auckland and Vancouver are quite similar, Malaysia is more of an interesting option. Have you been to Hong Kong? Though I’d pick Singapore over HKG if first time to either. But if you’ve been to Singapore you will have a good idea of what KL is like.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 03/10/2024 20:15

"But if you’ve been to Singapore you will have a good idea of what KL is like."

Really? They're completely different

Well, I lived in one and spent a lot of time in the other. They have similar food and shops, similar Chinese/malay/Indian culture, similar shop house architecture combined with modern office buildings, identical climate.what are the major differences to you?

ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit · 03/10/2024 20:21

I liked KL but only for a couple of days, for a week definitely Vancouver, as others have said the city has great beaches and parks, you can take the ferry to Vancouver island and go whale watching, or go up to whistler, go white water rafting in the mountains. It’s a great city with lots to do. Definitely a lot more expensive than KL though.

BirdIsland · 03/10/2024 20:28

We were in Vancouver earlier this year - the drug use and homelessness was horrific. Genuinely, heartbreakingly shocking, I've never seen anything like it and never wish to again.

ShanghaiDiva · 03/10/2024 20:34

KL is not that great imo- traffic is horrendous- there are much nicer/more interesting Asian cities imo. I would choose Singapore over KL any day.
Vancouver would be my choice.
