School SENCO

My DD has had a formal SEN diagnosis for a year, we have been told of a failure to progress in her state school. However the SENCO has never had a meeting with us even after us requesting one, and no intervention has peen put in place to support her. AIBU for expecting the SENCO team to have reached out by now?

would not qualify for an EHCP as she is not behind at school.

A child doesn’t have to be academically behind to get an EHCP. Sadly, LAs and some schools incorrectly tell parents their DC won’t get or don’t need an EHCP.

Thank you, we will look into this. I can’t think why the school wouldn’t want extra funding? We would be happy to pay for the submission. However maybe DD wouldn’t qualify and they school have been very cooperative and helpful since we have got in touch.

It is very difficult to get an EHCP in certain areas. My friend's son finally got one. He is autistic and attending school less than 50% before he got one. She had to appeal as initially refused. He then stopped attending school fully in Y11 so at least it could be used for a home tutor. My point being, even children with quite severe needs don't always get an EHCP.

Schools incorrectly tell parents their DC won’t get or don’t need an EHCP for several reasons. For example, some believe the LAs unlawful myths (but the law is the same whatever LA you are in. Although you may have to appeal). Another example is, although EHCPs can be fully funded and the LA is responsible for ensuring there is appropriate funding for the provision, many EHCPs are not fully fully funded because LAs often don’t do so unless forced.
