Has anyone actually managed to lose weight whilst taking antipsychotics?

I'm on a few different drugs for Bipolar disorder, some of which slow your metabolism right down. I'm also 42.

I'm about 3 stone overweight and desperate to lose it but having no success. My diet is good and I'm exercising, drinking plenty of water and getting lots of sleep - all to no avail! I can drop a couple of kilos but then it springs back on.

Has anyone managed to lose a significant amount of weight whilst taking these types of meds? Someone please say yes!

Have you tried asking for a different medication? I know most have a weight gain as a side effect but some may not over others. I have bipolar and on meds. Some made me gain stones of weight, others didn't. I still struggle with my weight but no where as bad as I've previously had.

Hi OP - no actual help here, but just to give you hope, my friend's ex has been on anti psychotic medication for years and she did lose weight.

Unfortunately I'm on several different meds so not much scope for changing.

My dear sister is on a high dose of clozaril for years now- she has lost heaps of weight (not sure but at least 3 stone) in the last 2 years by sticking rigidly to the keto diet. Her mental health has also never been better and she links that partly to the diet. Hope that helps? Smile

I gained stones when I was on olanzapine despite trying to stay healthy.

I've now been switched to lurasidone and the weight is coming off every week. Nearly 2 stone since I switched.

I did. By sticking to a low gi diet and walking every day.
