HELP. Horrible smell in 2 kitchen cupboards.

Rhysandswife · 24/09/2024 17:35

We moved into a 5 year old new build six months ago and I'm being tormented by the smell of something disgusting, kinda fishy coming from 2 of my kitchen cupboards. Weirdly, the one next to them smells fine. Every time I open the cupboards I want to scream. I've scrubbed the hell out of them.

I had a handyman out and he removed the kick boards and there was nothing under there, barely even any dust, no sign of damp or wet patches. I then made him remove the back of the cupboards too (in desperation) and still nothing. But, when he first opened them he said he couldn't smell much but as soon as he took the back off the smell hit him.

So what could it be? It can't be anything dead, there's nothing there at all and it's as strong as it was 6 months ago.

Please help.

I had to call THIRTY FRICKING PEOPLE before I found someone free to come over tonight. So I was making insane phone calls, while dealing with trick or treaters (in Scotland so it's a huge deal here!). Call 32 was to a lovely man who swung by and found the leak, fixed the leak, job done. Also said we've been very fortunate.

Bloody hell, Op. Thank goodness that you phoned your home insurance followed their advice.

So glad it's sorted, seems like you've been very lucky. Hope insurance will cover it, hopefully you can have a relaxing evening now after all that stress 💐

Skunkaniseed · 31/10/2024 20:03

When we had a gas leak I called Cadent (the smell gas number) and they were out within the hour, do they not operate in Scotland?

Mumistiredzzzz · 31/10/2024 20:07

Omg I was coming here to say gas but then thought no this has been going on so long it can't be gas. You're so lucky! You must be so relieved to have it sorted.

Yes we did similar @SkuSkunkaniseed.

Ginkypig · 31/10/2024 23:38

I am so so glad it’s sorted for you. You ARE so so lucky.

I would have bet on it as being the wiring and had been a bit worried for you, I had not been worried enough!

FedupMum2024 · 01/11/2024 00:03

Did you not notice an increase in your gas bill? Especially if this has been going on for 8 months?

TheBeesKnee · 01/11/2024 07:42

Bloody hell, what a close call! Can you get seen by a doctor? Idk if breathing in gas for that long is good for you.

VanilleFraise · 01/11/2024 09:12

Bloody hell! Glad you're all sorted!

Mynewnameis · 01/11/2024 09:18

Wow. An insurance company was actually useful. So glad you got it sorted op. This sounds very worrying.

candycane222 · 01/11/2024 09:30

Christ OP that's horrifying! Must have been a faulty installation - your housebuilder owes you big time!

candycane222 · 01/11/2024 09:37

...or a faulty hob or a clumsy carpenter ...all points to the builders however

I know it wasn't funny at all, but I can't help being reminded of this song though

It was gas?! Surely gas smells like, well, gas!!! I'm amazed the electrician didn't spot it.

squeaver · 01/11/2024 10:42

Really glad you got it fixed but the best people to contact in situations like this are your gas supplier - British Gas/Ovo/whoever. There's usually a number on your energy bill to call re gas leaks/carbon monoxide. They take this sort of thing really seriously and do usually send someone as soon as possible.

@Skunkaniseed Yes I called SGN- the guy was here 30 mins later- he's the one who found the leak and capped the house. Leaves you with paperwork on how to find a gas engineer to fix it.

They don't actually fix the problem, just make the house safe.

So I went on gassafetyregister.co.uk and just started ringing!

@nosmartphone I have no idea what gas smells like, to me it just smelled like fishy shite! Gas man said the proper term is rotten eggs. Now we know!

@FedupMum2024 it's been like this since we moved in, so we had no way of knowing, there was no increase in bills- we expect to see them go down maybe now though!
