Bloody oven gloves that actually WORK

AgathaMystery · 02/09/2024 20:00

Please vipers of MN, tel me which oven gloves to buy that will last and won’t split or crack in a matter of weeks.

I like long ones that cover the wrist, 2 individual mitts and a thumb - like bit mittens. I hate the tiny silicone ones and have just burnt myself using a pair after a trust pair of Jamie Oliver mitts gave up the ghost last week.

I know it’s boring AF, but what oven mitts/gloves do you swear by please?!

Aga gauntlets, definitely worth the price.

Pepperama · 02/09/2024 22:03

We’ve had these ones for many years. Expensive but great for small hands, full grip and total protection https://www.bakerybits.co.uk/challenger-oven-gloves-small?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD1lj1HDs5FtvDvuqK1ZNSDxFgRdz&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlrKm95OliAMVg5VQBh2BSTrCEAQYCCABEgKLJPD_BwE

My oven gloves are from Sophie Allport. I’ve got the double ones which I’ve had for around 5yrs. They’ve not split or ripped at all. I’m really impressed with them and will definitely replace them with the same.

Chicken Gauntlet

Chicken Gauntlet

Our wonderful Chicken Kitchen Gauntlet is a fantastic single oven glove mitt - extra long for added heat protection.

I have the Le Crueset oven mitt which is amazing. Its sadly wearing out and have had various cheaper versions from the supermarket over the years until I bought the Lakeland oven gloves. They work really well but I hate how they have gone since washing them. All misshaped and it takes ages to try and get them back to some semblance of their former selves. I think I may get some Le Crueset joined gloves.

Frosty1000 · 03/09/2024 12:17

Le cruset joined in the middle ones are my go to. Just replaced a pair after 15 years of use.

I have the full length version of these https://www.coolskin.com/

I have ones like that too. They are really excellent so long as they're not wet, but I think that applies to all fibre gloves. Mine came from JML I think, but it was years ago.
They were originally advertised as being made from Kevlar (ie. bullet proof vest stuff) 😁. I just chuck them in the washing machine when they get dirty.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 03/09/2024 12:31

I love the le creuset oven gloves, I have the double joined ones.

AgathaMystery · 03/09/2024 12:46

Looks like Le Creuset may be the winner at the moment. Could get quite tense.

I just use the double-ended padded fabric ones - a length between them. I’ve had two pairs for years, no problem.

shellyleppard · 03/09/2024 13:18

The silicone gauntlet are supposed to be good. Or get some extra long fire proof gauntlet?? My oven gloves are about 5 years old Lol slowly giving up the ghost though

Houseplanter · 03/09/2024 13:22

Log burner gloves...

BrokenWing · 03/09/2024 13:30

I bought some random joined silicone glove ones off amazon 5 years ago and they are still fine MasterClass Oven Gloves

Scampuss · 03/09/2024 13:50

These Le Creuset ones, the ends are double sided and they're quite thin/flexible for how protective they are:

BiddyPop · 03/09/2024 14:40

I use "Ove Gloves" which are individually fingered gloves with strips of silicon rather than a whole pad so they are flexible. And cover the wrist.

Hard to get in Ireland, DDad got his in the US and I ordered a pair from US Amazon initially but I think I was able to get another fromUK Amazon last year (I moved for work but DH still at home so we needed a 2nd pair).

They don't have any hanging tags though, so I have hand sewn a loop of (not ribbon but fabric webbing stuff like a ribbon) on to all of mine.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/09/2024 14:44

My problem isn't the gloves, it's where to put them. I have a pull down oven door and if I hang the gloves on that then they are too low down for me to get if I decide I need them, plus they fall off every time I walk past and brush them. I have a wooden peg arrangement on the edge of the kitchen worktop, but it's too far away to just 'grab'. So I always end up using the hand towel that sits on the worktop, just because it's there and accessible.

QuestionableMouse · 03/09/2024 14:58

I just use a folded tea towel and it works perfectly.

This thread's reminding me of that scene in Gavin and Stacey where the men are all stood round in Mick's kitchen admiring his new oven gloves and extoling the virtues 😁

Thank you all so much, I’m going to go away, read up on all these and conduct a Which? Style master list of oven gloves. The world needs it.

Oh I’d read the heck out of that! 😂 I have the opposite of asbestos skin so cloth gloves or a tea towel are hopeless for me. Years ago I had a pair from Lakeland that were brilliant but their successors have never been as good and have now lost effectiveness. I like the actual glove style with fingers (too clumsy for other styles) so looking at the options posted.

Welders gloves as suggested by pp might actually be a great call!

TheBossOfMe · 03/09/2024 19:14

I hate oven gloves that are joined - really annoying. I love my Cool skin ones - the absolute best because your hands are so flexible in them.

Can I ask you all a personal question? 😂

Masterclass silicon oven glove - buy 2 of the singles rather than the double. Total game changer, mine are used daily and got them in 2018

We have these. They go up to nearly by elbow.

Love them, took a bit to get used to them as they are larger than my hand and I felt I don't have a grip but I think we have them for 6+ years and no issue.

I plan to get one set for DD when she goes to uni as she is a whim when it comes to get things out of the oven.

Command hooks!! I have mine on the side of a cupboard at the exact height I need.
