g.co/kgs/snrGTVg Three Salons at the Seaside

BBC iplayer 'Three salons by the sea'.

I hope the link works. But I'm stunned. 1994 ladies hair salons in Blackpool.

Brilliantly realised, camerawork, almost avant-garde.

But 1994?? It felt 1970s to me.

Did anyone else see it?

There’s an interesting thread on the programme in the History of Blackpool Facebook group.

I hope it’s OK to add a screenshot from there.

edit - if you click on the picture you can see the rest of the words on the right hand side which seem to have been cut off.

I just watched this and absolutely loved it.

Although agree I was shocked to discover it was 1994!

Seems so much earlier.

Some very funny moments (the funeral bag, Hilary desperate to talk about poor woman who died on the toilet, the woman who never gets good use out of a chair, and the poor woman ran over outside kwiksave by the old woman too small to see over the dashboard).....

....but also very poignant.

Some very strong ladies.

Absolutely loved it,

Also thought of Mrs Merton immediately.

Couldn't help but notice how cold and uncomfortable their wee lace up shoes looked.

Loved the way it was filmed, interspersed with the progress of the lady with the long white hair getting her up-do.

Watching this now. Something very bittersweet about it.

I was entranced and amazed. It felt so much earlier than 1994; but it's easy to forget that 'Cool Brittania' only really happened in our major cities.

We had as much hope, excitement and a sense that things were looking up in the 90s as everyone else all over the country.
