Because of Elon's toxicity and the general cesspit nature of it. Anyone joining them?

I deleted my account about 3/4 months ago and not missed it at all. It’s a horrible corner of the internet where degenerates gather to spread hatred.

EasySkankin · 09/08/2024 15:51

It feels like there are shills trying to shepherd the discourse at the moment.

StaunchMomma · 09/08/2024 15:52

Starboy14 · 09/08/2024 15:13

I like it. I don't think Elon is toxic at all. He's the reason I stayed on it, it used to be alot worse.

😂😂😂😂😂😂

That is all.

Canalboat · 09/08/2024 15:53

I’ve left. EM reposting extreme propaganda
without without bothering to check if it is true. I can’t square that up with remaining on there.

PsychoSyd · 09/08/2024 15:53

RoseandVioletCreams · 09/08/2024 14:35

It's definitely a cess pit and lots of sex sights randomly on there also.

What's the alternative though?
When it was twitter it was amazing for immediate news locally, nationally and so on

What's the alternative? BlueSky.

Amazingideaorcrazy · 09/08/2024 15:53

Never got into it tbh. I like instagram personally, but I don't even use that these days

Before Elon bought it, no GC views were heard anywhere except on Mumsnet.
Thanks to EM, hopefully the idiocies of Gender Ideology and the power of Mermaids and Stonewall is being cut back.

He's alas contributing to the idea that it's fine to be racist. I can't support that man.

I imagine he's more anti trans than feminist!

It's a cesspit of hatred, fake news, brainwashing. If it was any other organisation there'd have been an inquiry by now. Needs shut down.

Tiredalwaystired · 09/08/2024 17:27

I stopped visiting when he bought it but haven’t deactivated my account. So his stats on volumes of participants probably can’t be trusted as there’s bound to be loads like me.

literally haven’t missed it

mansplainingsincethe90s · 09/08/2024 17:27

Yes. I had 4 accounts because they kept banning me for winding up right wingers. The final straw was when I implied that Paul Golding was a soft see-you-next-Tuesday. I couldn't be bothered to set up a fifth account. I used to really like Twitter. It was fun, light hearted and full of useful tit-bits and news. But it started to go bad around Brexit time and then when it became X it has totally unravelled.

If I found myself agreeing with Musk about anything I would reconsider the issue in question. HTH.

You decide what to think based on who else thinks it?

That's actually the root of a lot of what's wrong with public discourse at the moment.

In D&D terms, Musk is chaotic good. We need people like that to counter the Stasi-like Starmers of the world.

PermanentTemporary · 09/08/2024 17:40

Yeah I left two days ago. Was deciding what to do when Musk said that 'civil war is inevitable' in the UK, with a clear implication that he'd be very entertained by that, and then Pete Paphides left and that's enough for me.

I got served up a lot of GC stuff because if what I clicked on, but I also got lots of 'trad gender roles are great!' 'God doesnt mae mistakes!' right wing shite because that's what the algorithm thinks being GC is connected to. Was having to stop myself reacting to posts most of the time because I would literally only be encouraging them.

Now I'm on Threads. It's fine.

PermanentTemporary · 09/08/2024 17:42

@Blanketsburg Anyone who calls Keir Starmer 'the Stasi' is ludicrous and deserves to have Musk come round at eat at their house (can you imagine how punishingly dull that would be, plus he'd want to father a child with you and then fuck off).

PurpleSparkledPixie · 09/08/2024 17:50

Where are all the businesses going though? You used to be able to contact them through Facebook, that stopped and you had to contact them through Twitter, if you had complaints or queries as they don't answer the phone or emails.

I suspect businesses are staying put, just not paying extra for advertising.

stayathomer · 09/08/2024 17:52

Nope! Not leaving, look at the loveliness that is booktwitter or cats of twitter or dogsoftwitter and you’ll never leave😅 Have tried threads and bluesky and they’re just rubbish imitations. Not thrilled with musk effing up twitter but I’m staying, as are most people I know, we just can’t find each other as well these days😅

Pebbles16 · 09/08/2024 18:22

I left as soon as he took over.
Still have to "sometimes" recommend to clients as part of my job and it sticks in my craw

CurlewKate · 09/08/2024 18:28

@Blanketsburg "Stasi-like Starmer??" That's simultaneously funny and insulting to the victims of the real Stasi....

Tunnocksandtablet · 09/08/2024 18:39

I still find it useful. Particularly for local messages from the council, police, community and practice groups etc. It’s very immediate and there have been times when that has been incredibly helpful. Like others here I have a carefully curated group of followers/following, I don’t see the bile unless I go looking for it. I considered ditching but Threads, Bluesky haven’t got the critical mass or user ease to be as useful to me.

It is somewhere I can go to search what other people who don’t align with my politics or perspectives are talking about. It’s important to me not to get stuck in a bubble.

I have also decided it’s a public space and I refused to be bullied out of the public sphere by thugs. Musk can do one. I was there before him and it pleases me that he’s losing money and his fragile ego while I watch.

StMarieforme · 09/08/2024 19:20

I joined to follow Matthew Perry years ago. I met and spoke with some truly wonderful people on there, including a lovely lady that I never physically met, who I supported through interviews and presentations.
I left as soon as Musk took over. I missed it, but I could not, in good conscience, stay.

Juneday · 12/08/2024 08:26

I left last week. I initially went on to follow comedians and people that made me smile, updates of music events etc. But something changed and I was getting tweets that I to keep blocking or sometimes out of frustration correct their fake stories. In the end the number of fake stories and dangerous myths I saw repeated got me down and when I reported some tweets that really should have been deleted they always came back saying the tweets had not Birkenhead the rules. Sadly many on X don’t fact check and get caught up in the trouble being stirred up. I couldn’t continue to be a number that X needs to keep its advertising revenue. I know far right, conspiracy theorists, bots and fake news is still out there but IRL it is a tiny tiny % of the population that believe or agree and it’s a relief not to hear their nastiness and ignorance. Yes they can be blocked, but something changed with the algorithms weirdly just before the riots and it worried me. I feel calmer and less anxious that the world is full of ignorance and nastiness.
