Sunbed etiquette

We're on holiday in Turkey ATM. We were at the pool first thing for about an hour, then went to the snack bar for an hour or so for some breakfast and left towels and our stuff on our sunbeds so we could come back to them (yes I know that's cheeky) but when we came back another family had taken the sunbeds next to ours and pinched one of ours - fair enough I accept we were being a bit naughty reserving it whole we weren't there BUT they just sat on all our stuff! Who does that?? The man was sitting his arse on DC's cap. Also they hadn't bothered to pull the sunbed across to join the rest of the ones they had and left it literally touching our other ones. This is weird right?
Why wouldn't you move the personal stuff - and the USED towel first? And why wouldn't you move it across so you're not in someone else's group?
It annoyed me so I decided to make them feel uncomfortable by sitting on the one closest to them until they moved it over away from our remaining ones. I also had to pull my son's cap out from under the man's bum!

No definitely not possible he didn't notice our stuff. There was also a book and a Rubik's cube along with the towel. The only bit his arse was actually on was the hat though. So weird. Especially when there's loads of others available anyway

So why OP, if so many others available, did you feel the need to keep so few items on these sunbeds whilst you went for breakfast. A towel, book and rubik’s cube would have easily fit in a small bag and taken 3 seconds to collect up.

This is so dramatic 😂

to be fair… you have started a thread about this “event” and posted a dozen times about it! 😆

This. This is exactly the etiquette

I disagree. If I can see you in the restaurant I'm moving your stuff so I can lie down.

Christ, this is why I stick with camping. I can’t think of anything worse that this.

Shudder at the thought of camping tbh 😆

FunIsland · 27/07/2024 20:32

🤣 fair enough

My friend shared some photos of her holiday in a hotel a couple of weeks ago. Just looking at it made me feel depressed.

going on the threads from campers depressed at the battering rain and howling wind and kids upset and bored… makes me feel depressed

I think it’s important to understand your audience 🤣. We go at least once a year and have done since the kids were little, now they’re adults they message us to tell us when to book the week off so we can all go together grandkids and all. Last year there were 4 generations of us camping together

so probably best not to plough in with how a type of holiday that the OP is on and that many many enjoy with just “this sounds like my worst nightmare!!” and how it makes you feel “depressed”

Isn't there more to holidays than sunbeds? There is a whole world out there

There are different sorts of holidays, exploring ones or relaxing ones. I like both but if I stay in a hotel with pool and sunbeds it’s because I want to relax and people nabbing all the sunbeds is not relaxing!

Nonda · 28/07/2024 16:25

I wish people could just behave reasonably! It’s the rushing to the sunbeds at 7am that causes the issue. I can’t believe this hasn’t changed since the 70s!! Showing my age here but Anyone remember that lager advert?? It brings out the worst kind of territorial behaviour in some people and if the resort allows it, everyone feels pressured to reserve them as there will be none left by 10am! Reminds me of that kind of barging in at an all-inclusive buffet you get sometimes. It really brings out the greed in some people. I try and go by treat others the way you would like to be treated but if someone actually barges me out of the way around the pancakes (as an example), you will see my wrath!! 🤣🤣 or I will have to employ some pretty nifty Ninja moves to get in there first next time. Joking, a smile and a bit of charm/politeness helps a lot as I think it is the staff and other guests that make a holiday good.

i hope our forthcoming holiday is not like this. I did research it quite carefully but you can never be sure until you are there. I try to be quite ‘live and let live’ but it does leave a bit of a nasty taste in your mouth (metaphorically!) to see selfish behaviour.

SloopyDoodle · 28/07/2024 18:19

I'm off on an all inclusive next week, I haven't been on one in over 10 years. What do people do then when they want a sunbed but all are reserved? Is it ok to move someone's stuff? Or would you just not use a sunbed at all? Our hotel says no to reserving a sunbed but from TripAdvisor reviews this isn't always held in practice.

In that case luckily it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever be in the same hotel.

🙄 people are arguing about sunbeds and there are pages of people saying how they don’t like this aspect of a holiday, I was literally joining in with that. It’s not a personal insult.

In exactly the same way that people go onto camping threads and talk about how awful it is, and I’ve never seen anyone try to police that.

you said it was your worst nightmare to have a holiday like this and that you felt “depressed” when you saw photos of your friend’s all inclusive hotel.

Bit different to saying that you don’t like sun bed reserving

there is little more that will exercise campers more than people saying they wouldn’t want to do kt

snd they make it abundantly clear!

loads of threads i have seen from campers telling critics to sod off! and too right if it’s a thread for example about a camper talking about one aspect of camping

Hmmmm I've always been very tempted to move their stuff but then also move the sunbeds so it doesn't look like it was me! If there's a sign saying no reserving but people do it anyway I'd ask the holiday rep or hotel reception to find you some sunbeds or ask them to move some that are reserved. Trouble is it's difficult to tell if people are using the sunbeds but are in the pool etc

Flossflower · 28/07/2024 19:35

I usually prefer a more active holiday but occasionally do a sitting round a pool one. If you want a sun bed you ask the pool/towel person if they have any free sun beds and give them a large tip. Usually they will find beds that someone hasn’t used in the last hour and remove the stuff. Then they will notice you by the pool the next day and ask you if you need a bed!

WhamBamThankU · 28/07/2024 19:48

I just had 2 weeks in fuertaventura and the signs said no saving sunbeds. In reality everyone was doing it so we did too. By the time we went down at 9am half at least were reserved. We ate breakfast and then went to the pool for the majority of the day, loads of beds reserved with nobody using them till late afternoon. We wouldn't have done that, if we were done with the pool we left.

That's a good idea. I might try it
