My washing machine child lock is doing my head in

Are there any without, or with one that you can turn off? Or disable?

I don't want to wait 5 bloody minutes to open the damn door and heaven forbid I want to stop a programme and open it (like when it decides not to spin)

I do realise they're a safety feature but there are no children here

I don't think what you are talking about is a child lock. Sounds more like when you have to wait for the water to drain out of the drum before you can open the door.

Houseplanter · 27/07/2024 11:12

It's at the end of the programme when nothing is happening. Complete silence. Then it beeps and the door opens

Totally unreasonable amount of washing machine rage atm.

It’s so annoying I agree. When you realise you’ve dropped a pair of socks milliseconds after pressing start and have to wait before opening.

i also have an issue with ‘washing machine minutes’ why tell me there are 2 minutes of the cycle to go and then when you go back it has decided to add 12 minutes!?!

Devilsmommy · 27/07/2024 11:16

I've got an indesit with dials and you can stop it in the middle and pop stuff in and it doesn't make you wait at the end.

Houseplanter · 27/07/2024 11:23

I also have a lot of issue with a spin only that spends half of the 10 minute programme just gently tossing it about and then only spins for 4 minutes and then I wait another age for it to open. FFS JUST SPIN IT

(Can you tell I'm having a bad morning?)

I think it's a bad design incase a pet gets in and you can't open the door

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/07/2024 11:27

They're to stop water pissing out all over your floor - extremely hot water at that. There might not be any children (or cats or dogs) in your home, but you'd be pretty pissed off if you could open the door in the middle of a 90 Celsius prewash, wouldn't you?

ApolloandDaphne · 27/07/2024 11:29

My Bosch opens almost immediately after finishing and can be opened during a cycle to pop stuff in. Water never comes pouring out. The newer machines use as little water as possible.

AIstolemylunch · 27/07/2024 11:29

Onmy Siemens washin machines (ive had 2) you can disable the child lock. Theres always a period during the wash when the drum is full when you cant open the door though.

KnittedCardi · 27/07/2024 11:29

I've got a Bosch. No delays. You can open it mid cycle too. It just assesses the water level, beeps three times and unlocks.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 27/07/2024 11:33

My Bosch let's me open the door at pretty much any moment. It does, though, do the whole washing machine minutes thing so it tells you it only has 2 to go before jumping back up to 4 or them just being the longest two minutes in the world

TeaAndStrumpets · 27/07/2024 11:36

It may be worth looking on Google/Youtube for your model. I have a Zanussi washer dryer which would stay locked for ages after it finished drying, so no risk of a flood if opened straight away. It drove me nuts. I found out online that all I need to do is move the dial from dryer to 30 minute wash (next along) and it unlocks immediately.

RhetoricalRectangle · 27/07/2024 11:37

I don't think it's a child lock. Mine does this when the drum is hot e.g. after a long drying cycle.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 27/07/2024 11:39

I wish they’d add those 5 minutes to the timer so I’m not stood by the machine like a lemon waiting for the click that signifies the actual end of the wash.

PrincessFluffyPants · 27/07/2024 11:40

There was a thread on here a little while ago along the lines of "My washing machine is a liar" discussing the frustrations of the washing machine countdown (and other appliances). I felt like I'd met my tribe that day.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 27/07/2024 11:41

I have the same issue with my cooker - if I accidentally knock the left dial it switches the oven off but does nothing to alert you until the timer goes off and it’s not cooked.

Sorry 🤣

You need a good night's sleep, hope you get one and feel better.

Child locks are annoying, but I'd rather have them than the alternative.

dementedpixie · 27/07/2024 13:02

That not a child lock then; just a delay between the programme finishing and the door unlocking.

A child lock would prevent it being opened until the child lock is deactivated manually
