Visiting York for the day soon, sorted for lunch and already a big fan of Betty's. What's everyone's favourite thing to do in York?

The cat cafe! Huge bits of cake and my DC loved seeing all the cats and playing with them. You have to book your slot in advance. It's got a slight aroma... but we still loved it! Grin

Castle museum and city walls.
used to love the shambles but now it’s all Harry Potter and ghost themed and too many queues.
love bettys and the downstairs basement restaurant area more so than the upstairs glass one. Its more atmospheric and can feel
the history.
down stonegate is a quaint little pub reputed to be the oldest/most haunted. It’s a green king now but it’s still nice to go for a drink or a reasonable lunch.

we’ve never been impressed by the chocolate story so I would say not to bother unless it’s raining and you are desperate for something indoors to do.

boat trips are always good or even just a walk down by the river. Again a few pubs that you can sit and have a drink and lunch if it’s a nice day.

we visit York a lot as have family there

Thanks so much everyone! Definitely avoiding the races weekend and have booked a river cruise for soon after we arrive and think we'll do the minster after lunch, which we've booked at a French restaurant.

@Newtrix
La Rustique? (Copper gate) Good choice
There's a Sostren Greene ( however it's spelled!) which ppl rave about i think there's only a few of them, it's like a criss between IKEA and flying tiger (also has a flying tiger) Fenwick (I don't get the hype)
Tulliver's independent health food store which sells lovey herbs and spices

Newtrix · 11/07/2024 23:13

Yes La Rustique! I'd forgotten the name, menu looks really good. Tullivers definitely sounds like our kind if place, love a little independent place. Is Monk bar choclatiers any good?

My favourite thing to do in York is the Cold War bunker. It's so interesting.

herbaceous · 12/07/2024 12:23

If you go to the Cold War bunker you could drop into Holgate Windmill too! Fully functioning urban windmill. It's very interesting!

Full disclosure - I do their social media!
