Talk turned to planning our Christmas lunch today in the office. What's the best work Christmas lunch/party you've ever been to? Where was it and why was it so good?

Christmas dinner in (If I recall correctly) on an August afternoon

It was the hotels ‘sampler’ for organisers, full Christmas dinner with entertainment, Santa and presents etc - then walked out into the afternoon sunshine.
In a government department with over 200 people in our organisation, but subsequently downsized on re-organisation with efficiencies, contractorisation etc

We were invited back one year when there were only 4 of us, and also 2 of us were moving on. We told the hotel that we were much smaller with an uncertain future, but they were still happy to invite us. That afternoon became pretty much our last Christmas dinner together and effectively a leaving do.

The best ones are when you arrive, eat a huge dinner and then go home.
