Help!! What stinks?!

Dear god help me solve the mystery of my smelly bedroom. I'm at a total loss

Woke up today and bedroom smells funny. Definitely coming from this room. When you walk into the bedroom from another room you can smell it. I had a panic as last night my cat ran in to hide from the hoover and once years ago she pood on the floor- must have been too frightened to go to her tray. But I looked everywhere and it's not that. It smells different, I can't put my finger on it. Like rotting food? Fruit maybe? I thought maybe the bedding so I stripped it and washed it. Smell is still there. Windows have been open all day.

I've looked everywhere incase my toddler has done something bonkers like post a banana into an underwear drawer or something.

What in god's name is making this smell?!

I had this, it was a dead rat under the floorboards

There is no way you’d a sweet smell and it was a dead rat. No wat at all. It is not a sweet smell.

My ex once left a protein shake under the stairs. When they go off they stink like a sweet vomity smell. Anything like that forgotten in a bag?

@Twelvetimes

But yes, I'm worried it's a mouse under the floor or walls perhaps. Would that happen in a top floor flat with no previous evidence of any creatures? We've been here 5 years and no signs of anything before.

Unlikely, but you never know.

I don't think there would be much point pulling up floorboards unless you knew it actually was a rodent, and whereabouts to look. We once had the stench emanating from the understairs cupboard but could not find the body. We just waited for the smell to go (found the body mummified months later - a tiny shrew).

It will hopefully be something fairly innocuous and easy to get rid of!

@JJathome it definitely can be a sweet musty smell (and usually is) for dead rodents.

I found something on the internet saying coffee grounds are a good way to clear the smell when we had a dead mouse in the wardrobe. Put a mug of coffee grounds in there and it worked really well so may be worth a try OP.

Any plant pots with stagnant water in them? We had one stinking out our flat a few years ago!

Sigh.

Well, this is embarrassing. My toddler was sick in bed earlier this week and in all the night time kerfuffle everything was rinsed quickly and flung in the machine then washed the next day. Turns out my husband put something in the wash basket and we've been putting dirty laundry on top of it all week not realising.

I checked the washing but it was at the very bottom and the smell wasn't obviously coming from there. I didn't even think about that! 🤢

All dealt with now. Grimsville.

Hey, at least the neighbours are alive and the cat's not in trouble.

Thanks everyone for your tales of milk soaked towels and rotting protein drinks. Makes me feel less guilty about vom-laundry.

A much better result than a decaying rodent!

Or a decaying neighbour. Can't believe I thought for a minute that the neighbour was dead because my laundry basket is rancid.

😬

Can’t believe some folks were saying defo dead rodent, anyone who has smelled one would know immediately it couldn’t be that. Least it’s easily fixable op.
