Posting early as I will be in the skies later.

Perhaps someone can redo the link?

Silly

(Yes, I know.)

That is the original spelling (according to QI). Well done for being historically accurate!

QI/Sandi Tokvsig

"The pointless C can be found off the coast of Cornwall is the silent "c" in the "Scilly Isles". They were originally called the "Silly Isles", and the word "Silly" originally meant "happy and blessed". The "c" was added around the 1570s because the word had come to mean what it does today and they did not want to be mocked."

@Mothership4two About going to Coventry...I don't think we do. I think there is a book ' Fire in Coventry ' ,but don't know why anyone would be sent there...also know it's the home of Lady Godiva. Do tell, please

Always think it's an odd term

@Mothership4two it is a weird term. I would totally have bacon and egg at a wedding though. Except I can’t eat egg without spilling yolk down myself.

When a group of people collectively stop speaking to one of the group deliberately then they are "sending them to Coventry" or they have been "sent to Coventry".

It probably originates from the era of the English Civil War, when Royalist prisoners of war would be taken to the Parliamentarian stronghold of Coventry where they would be shunned by both soldiers and city residents.

Mothership4two · 02/05/2024 14:55

I'd love that @Oganesson118 although I would skip the bacon. Maybe an egg bap? I'd prefer that to typical wedding style fodder!

@Mothership4two thanks for the explanation...I have a few people I'd like to 'send to Coventry' myself!

A family member was trying to remember an actor's name and they said "you know, that actor, Dominic Cumberland-Sausage!" and we all knew exactly who they meant! That always tickles me whenever anyone mentions a Cumberland sausage or Benedict Cumberbatch 😆
