What should I drink at the pub?

Despite my username I rarely drink alcohol. When I do (maybe 6 times a year?) it will tend to be good champagne- quite likely Bollinger (but not for breakfast). As a student 25 years ago my standard drink was vodka and orange or sometimes vodka and coke. I love a posh cocktail but on the rare occasions I'm in a pub (the kind that doesn't have a cocktail menu) I never know what to order. I can't drink gin. Can't drink wine if it's not super expensive as 1. I don't enjoy it 2. I'll get a headache. Can't afford to order super expensive wine in a pub even if they had any. Recommendations please!

I was going to say Cinzano and lemonade, but you would have to check the lemonade was naice, so maybe not.

Are we in the early 1990s? 😉😁

Vodka lime and soda. You can also alternate with plain lime and soda if you don't like to drink much.

BarrelOfOtters · 09/04/2024 17:11

I drink pints in old men pubs because they are usually well kept. If it's obvious they aren't going to be then I'll have a bottled lager.

Anyway back to you - campari and soda or martini from the green bottle with proper lemonade (you'll probably have to buy a can).

Whisky and full fat ginger ale or canada dry (I love this).

Southern Comfort and lemonade.

TM1979 · 09/04/2024 19:01

Vodka lime soda or a bottle of Corona with a slice of lime stuck in it.

As pubs are much more accomodating now, how about a nice pot of tea and a packet of scone flavoured crisps?

slashlover · 09/04/2024 19:16

I don't like the taste of 90% of alcohols. I like a flavoured gin with lemonade or schnapps and lemonade.

Blackcats7 · 09/04/2024 19:18

In my drinking days my tipple was cider and blue bols. It looks like a pint of fairy liquid but tastes delicious.

Kalevala · 09/04/2024 19:24

Proper 6% medium-dry or dry cider. A good perry.

babypeach · 09/04/2024 19:27

OP I get you-I am in no way posh or rich but have ended up working in companies in the past that were and now I also would choose champagne if could and various other luxury food options, not to mention the venues/hotels…alas I am also 40 odds and never managed to put myself in that salary bracket so it’s champagne at Christmas for me! I do not like prosecco really or beer or vodka or gin…
however I will drink a reasonable red and I am fond of port, dubonnet, and nice tequila so still somehow manage to drink too much 😂

Good luck with finding lemonade with no sweeteners in a pub.

I think the choice is now Appletise, Coca Cola if they have it, which they usually don't, Fever Tree with or without vodka, or orange juice, which I like with soda and in my experience you have to ask for as a 'FRESH orange juice and SODA, please, that's FRESH orange juice NOT cordial, no NOT J2O either, just FRESH orange juice and SODA, no, not lemonade, SODA' <weeps>

Crikey why does every thread on mumsnet go like this now? I'd have thought 'what should I drink' was a pretty innocent question, but as you've asked I do have an ASD diagnosis, social anxiety and I don't visit pubs much. I do socialise but at home and or in cafes mostly. Went to a pub recently, maybe for the first time in 8 years, fancied a nice drink and couldn't really think what to order. Thought the nice people of mumsnet might give me some ideas for the next time which they have. Thanks all 🙂

@Kalevala oh yes a good perry is a plan. Not sure I'd know if it was good or not on sight.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles yes I remember when ordering tea in a pub was only for weirdos. I had a friend who used to do that- also 25 years ago back when pubs stank of smoke and were really only for alcohol, smoking and the occasional bag of peanuts

Campari and soda
