Buying extra annual leave

Work have brought in a new policy, allowing staff to buy up to 5 additional annual leave days per year.

We currently get 28 days + bank holidays.

28 days is usually plenty enough annual leave, but I’m thinking that most people would jump at the chance of getting more time off work for only a small reduction in pay (buying 5 days would result in a 2% reduction on my annual gross salary).

Just keen to hear what others would choose to do?

I didn’t realise this was so common. We get the basic 22 days + BH where I work and it’s never enough for me with a primary age child. I might float the idea of buying annual leave and see what the higher ups think…

I have recently started working somewhere that offers this.

A colleague has purchased 10days and wants to use all their leave, Inc the extra 10 days in the school holidays.

My child is significantly younger than theirs and SEN and I have been pressured to take leave outside of the school holidays so my colleague can use the days they purchased (edited to add my colleague and I cannot be off at the same time).

I literally don't understand how this has been allowed to happen and want to thank the OP for starting this thread as its made me consider putting a complaint in at my work about how it's been handled.

We can buy extra annual leave, but for me the loss in earnings is too great.

I think also working in a team if you or others take extra days the company is better off but each person in the team has more work.
So you hay choose not to buy any but have to work harder x days a year anyway.
