Made beef bolognese in the slow cooker. There's a sort of scum on the surface. Does it look ok?

I've just looked at the recipe and, whilst I wouldn't cook a bolog in a slow cooker, it really should look much better!

Did you follow the recipe and did you cook it at the right setting for long enough?

I cook Bolognese in the slow cooker all the time. As long as OP defrosted the mince before cooking, it's 100% fat sitting on top.

It needs mixed halfway through. I also use a lot more tomato purée than online recipes ask for and add a beef stock cube. Then some Worcestershire sauce stirred in right at the end.

I always use a 5% fat mince too

Yes and yes - 8 hours on low. Stirred very well (I thought!) Before switching on.

You don't need to brown the mince but you should stir halfway through. It's the fat coming out of the mince and it will just sit on top like that.

It's absolutely fine to just give it a good stir.

But did you defrost the mince first? You shouldn't put it in the slow cooker frozen.

Yes I did defrost it thoroughly first.

DP is sampling it.

It did smell delicious as it cooked.

While I’m sure it’s absolutely fine it’s reminiscent of everything my mum used to produce from her slow cooker and the reason i’ll never own one!
