Cars - Automatic vs Manual

I am 44 years old and after a few years out I really want to start driving again. I can finally afford to buy (an okay) used car and am really, really excited about the freedom it will give me.

I am getting my eyes tested next week to check I am still legal on the numberplate test etc. I am going to arrange some refresher lessons with a driving instructor.

I want to buy an automatic (although I can drive a manual) but it is just for convenience.

My Mum and Dad, sister etc. are insisting I have to buy/drive a manual and keep sending me links to used cars on that basis. I keep telling them my preference but it is ignored.

Is there some kind of stigma associated with driving an automatic?

The roads are a lot busier and (in my opinion) more aggressive these days and the thought of not having to worry about gear changes really appeals to me.

Just wanted an opinion on this - thanks.

Automatic every time. It was years ago, but I'll never forget the increduluous look on the face of the Hertz man in the US when I asked for a manual; however, by the end of that trip I was converted for life to automatics and changed my car less than two weeks after returning home.

I can't remember the last time I drove a manual, although it wouldn't be a problem if push came to shove.

Yes, I appreciate that many of those who prefer automatics are concerned more about arriving at the destination than the journey to get there. But for those of us who enjoy driving, or "proper driving", the actual journey is the enjoyable part. And that's fine by me. I prefer a manual because I enjoy driving. I like changing gears.

Unless you are having to double declutch every time you change gear, you aren’t really driving.

You might as well get an auto.

Edited to say that I can’t double declutch to save my life but we do have a car that needs it.

I'm so sorry this man is causing you such an upheaval. You have the right to a car and I'm sorry you feel it's not worth it.

I hope you can move/find somewhere to park. Flowers

Haha a lot of auto defence here!

If you're happy and you feel safe in your car, right on. But I don't feel comfortable with the way they drive. I like to do the driving myself. I feel safer and more confident that I can avoid a collision when I'm the one responding to the road conditions.

You've clearly never driven decent autos. Both mine have manual paddle shifts or I can change gear from the gear lever. it just doesn't require a clutch pedal as the clutch is automatic. Also autos have a kick down function that if you floor it, it drops gear automatically. Both mine are extremely responsive and aren't available as manuals as the auto boxes are far superior. Most sports cars, supercars and hypercard are auto and for good reason.

Good for you that you're happy. I don't like them though. I don't need a car to babysit me when I'm driving when I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself. Plus I don't see the point in using paddles with a more expensive and unreliable transmission.

And yeah, I've driven 'decent' autos. I'd still rather drive a cheap banger manual.

We don't all need to like the same things.
