Snack before bed

Do you have a snack before going to bed and if you do what is it?

Feeling peckish but not sure what to have. I usually have crackers with tomato or fruit and Greek yoghurt. Not in the mood for these tonight.

All help welcome wise ones Grin

@Citygirlypop I love that you keep snacks in your bedside table! That's so clever. I can't believe I've never thought to do that in all the years I wake up starving in the middle of the night. I am going now to immediately stock up the bedside table with nibbles!

AdaColeman · 16/01/2024 01:32

When I was growing up, my Mother had a fear of suffering from "night starvation"! So supper was always on offer, milky cocoa and biscuits, cheese and crackers, ham sandwiches, tea and fruit cake, crumpets, toast, scones...

These days, I rarely eat supper, though I might have a cup of mint or fennel tea. My Mum would definitely be worried about me. Brew Brew

Green olives & cheddar cheese. Or popcorn.

QueenBitch666 · 16/01/2024 02:05

Tesco Peri Peri chips cooked in the air fryer with lashings of Tommy K to soak up a bottle of Rioja Grin

HollyKnight · 16/01/2024 02:11

Lately it's been crackers and cheese with Branston pickle and a cup of tea, or a small bowl of cubed cheddar cheese, chocolate chunks and mixed nuts from Lidl. That cheese and chocolate combo is so nice.

TwoOfMine · 16/01/2024 02:47

I actually also eat cornflakes straight out of the box like crisps Blush especially as an evening snack

sawnotseen · 16/01/2024 04:50

Cheese and crackers (st Agur preferably)

sawnotseen · 16/01/2024 04:53

Oh, also I keep sweets in my bedside cabinet for if I wake up in the night which I often do and read to get back to sleep munching haribo. Newish bf saw them and was baffled and amused!

Sober : celery and hummus
after wine : cheese, Doritos and hot salsa.
I suffer terribly with heartburn these days but I’ll never learn 🤣

Do you think you might have a stomach ulcer? Wine reacts really badly with that and so does anything spicy.

My dad used to say he needed to stave off night starvation when I caught him secretly eating cereal in the kitchen before bed. I thought he'd made up that term himself! I wonder where they both got it from!

greenacrylicpaint · 16/01/2024 06:42

never.
that would make me uncomfortable lying down. I need to stay upright after eating or drinking for half an hour/hour. (I suspect I have a sort of reflux).

@Lizzieregina never been a fan of hot milk unless its in hot chocolate Grin
I always think cornflakes and hot milk sounds nice.

I’m from South Africa and we’ve always had cereal with hot milk, not warm hot. Everyone single person I know there has hot milk. I was shocked when I came here and learned that it’s cold milk and cereal!! Even in winter!! I still can’t get my head around it 😂

My go to late night snack is a toasted cheese sandwich.

Newestname002 · 16/01/2024 08:26

Usually a slice of wholemeal Irish soda bread or rye bread with "butter" and maybe a small slice of cheese plus a cup of hot milk or hot cocoa with cinnamon. Never fail to sleep after that - sometimes if I dawdle going to actual bed I'm asleep on the sofa....🌹

MissyB1 · 16/01/2024 08:35

Just a hot chocolate or Horlicks will do me. If I was seriously hungry then I would have a piece of toast with it.

Night Starvation was an invented condition, dreamt up in the 1930s, as part of an advertising campaign for Horlicks malted milk drink. The nourishing drink would stave off the dreaded condition!

Of course, during the Depression of the 1930s, many people would have been hungry at night, so the slogan cleverly played on the fears people had of hunger and starvation.

mindutopia · 16/01/2024 12:03

I don't normally have a snack before bed, but when I do (I have a GI issue that sometimes settles a bit with some bland food and a cup of tea), I'll have some digestives or rich tea biscuits.

Olika · 16/01/2024 12:08

This banana on toast... never heard of it before. Is it just bananas and toast or you add something else as well?

Pip1402 · 16/01/2024 12:10

Ah thanks @AdaColeman how interesting. That explains it then!

Do not do this if you have ever had a mouse find its way in ask me how I know Envy

I’ve just had banana on toast for my bed time snack, I have an early dinner so need something before bed.

Not had this for ages. Particularly like it on seedy toast. The banana goes so well with the nutty toasted seeds! Like it with proper butter too 😋

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/01/2024 06:39

@EveryOtherNameTaken that’s exactly how I do it too, seeded bread and decent butter. It’s one of my favourite bedtime snacks.

Noneofourbusiness · 17/01/2024 13:27

Last night's bedtime snack was
2 ryvita with soft cheese and tomatoes
Strawberries and blackberries with greek yoghurt.

Thought I would keep this thread going as I've not seen many, if any bedtime snack posts Grin

Glad you did because I've only just seen this. I normally have cornflakes or alpen but I'm getting bored of them, plus I cant stop using a big bowl. I don't make good choices so I hope I can find a better option here 😂

Noneofourbusiness · 17/01/2024 15:43

@INeedAnotherName aww fab another bedtime snacker Grin welcome!

I was the same running out of ideas.
