Last letter of TARGET is the first letter of 997.
If you gave TARGET the same last letter as 997 you'd have a golfing term.

I'm not sure I want to know what's going on & how to do it, in case I get addicted to it.

@ifIwerenotanandroid the word changes every day, this is a bit of an odd one in the white sense. I got it by its other meaning.
The numbers represent the ranking in the game, we replace actual words with rankings in clues to avoid spoilers.
In the screenshots upthread there are numbers by the orange "progress bars" which are the numbers we use in clues.

I don't remember seeing any orange rankings. Is each orange rank one & only one word? My poor frozen little words had decimal places IIRC.

The orange bars are in the screenshots on the thread, and only pertain to the thousand closest synonyms/antonyms to the target word.
Some days it takes less than a minute to find the word.
There are conversely a few days we don't talk about, when the algorithm throws out an absolutely mental "word" and it takes hours, but a typical day takes about 100 guesses and maybe 30 minutes.
