Has anyone flown with Ryanair recently? What is the baggage like?

My partner booked tickets with Ryanair. He went with the basic package and that says one small bag only. He didn't pick any checked luggage or priority boarding. He picked the most basic package.

With one small bag only policy it gives the dimensions and it's 40×25×20 cm or something like that.

I was considering buying a luggage bag but I think I will meet this with a backpack I have.

I have another issue now. Will Ryan air allow a handbag as well as 'one small bag only' or is the handbag supposed to fit the criteria. I won't be able to travel without my handbag. I will need my handbag to hold my phone, wallet, passport, boarding passes, travel bands, ear plugs, book. My partner can travel filling his pockets up. I'm not able to travel like that. My clothes done have pockets either.

I'm really going to struggle with one small bag only for a weekend.

Just in case I am not allowed a handbag:

I wonder would it be possible to get a crossover body bag and wear it over my shoulder and wear it short with my jacket over it. Would I be able to smuggle a handbag on my body like that along with a backpack of stuff.

That's mad.

It's not always great to have everything electronic. Just in case batteries got dead or systems go down.

Yeah we went with Ryanair in November and there just wasn't an option to print or get a printable version. Probably another revenue source I'm sure.

If you are flying between airports in the UK or Ireland, buy a pack of sweets and get a WH Smith bag, shove your handbag in it. Has worked for me every time.

Edited

If you drop your phone and break it on the way to the airport you're royally fucked. Or if you lose it or someone swipes it.

We used ryanair in June and printed our boarding passes.

Sorry but you are sounding incredibly precious about this! There's an art to packing light and it's much easier if you can master it. I am literally the queen of shoes and always used to like to take a selection - I just don't do it any more. You don't need a big handbag - a small crossbody is better security-wise anyway. Layer up, wear your biggest garments!

"I don't usually fly Ryanair so I presumed I would have to go to a check in deck to get boarding passes."

Well that deffo will cost you 😅

Don't ask them to do anything. On a deck or a desk! Check in online 24 hours before and print or save boarding passes to your apple or phone wallet

WinkyTinky · 10/01/2024 09:58

You can definitely print out the boarding passes, so please make sure you do! I had mine ready on my phone, but kept the print outs in my passport to show as and when. Whatever you do, don't get caught out by forgetting to check in online! When you do check in, you get the option to download the passes and print them out. Lots of people did use their phones (this was last week) but also lots had them printed out.

Obviously it depends on your attitude to risk OP, but I'd just take a sightly larger rucksack and put your handbag in there. Two bags attracts more attention than a slight larger bag. I always use my CabinMax 45cm x 36cm x 20cm, which conforms to Easyjet's rules but not Ryanair, but I've never had an issue when travelling with Ryanair - it still fits under the seat in front. When I look round at other people's backpacks in the queue I reckon the majority are slightly above the guidelines. Just make sure you aren't one of the first on the plane - aim to be in the latter half, but not so late you attract attention. The staff just want to get boarded and take off on time, so as long as you aren't completely taking the piss, you'll be fine.

Have you flown recently? They do a physical check most of the time now. Can it fit in the basket check

Caspianberg · 10/01/2024 10:29

Ryanair are fine

Ryanair flight might be £60. They charge £40 for extra hand luggage - so you have the option of £60 or £100 with extra to fly

Ba is just everything included. You get a suitcase, plus x2 bits hand luggage. But the same journey might cost £200.

So it’s just that Ryanair allow the option to go without. But even if you add handluggage it’s almost always still cheaper

We last flew Ryanair. 2 adults, 1 child. Added 2 checked in cases, and 1 extra hand luggage bag (for toddler cabin pram convenience). It still worked out €420 for the 3 of us return, v €960 With British airways. Just Ba would have given us 3 checked in and 3 cabin overhead bags included, but we wouldn’t have taken that many as couldn’t physically carry that many around the other end with toddler.

I flew Ryanair last June, but of course they could have changed since then...

I'd frankly be surprised if they had time to check every passengers bag size though - they normally have a tight turnaround time to unload and reload passengers (part of the reason they are cheaper)
