Virgin River - does it get better?

Recommended by two friends.

All I’ve seen so far (3 episodes) is the tired cliche of city girl moves to small town and meets a love interest who’s lived there all his life. Seems obvious she’s going to struggle at work and to be accepted but clearly will succeed.

Do I persevere?

I gave up after season 3 - it's easy watching but the Hope character annoys me so m in I can't watch it. I keep trying and failing to get back into it

peppermintcrisp · 02/01/2024 01:28

Hope goes missing for a bit...maybe half a season?

peppermintcrisp · 02/01/2024 01:28

*sorry spoiler alert! Haha

It's wonderful. Probably the most relaxing and joyful program on TV at the moment.

MaddieElla · 02/01/2024 03:45

I'm watching Hope on Skype a lot, I'm guessing season 2 was during covid!

I'm only on the 2nd season but I'm already grasping it's very slow. No twins bump yet. Also does Jack ever spend more than 5 minutes in the bar before he's rushing off somewhere?

It is a comfort watch though and the scenery is beautiful

The local love interest reminds me of Paul Hollywood. Same strutting meaty masculinity.

It killed it dead for me.

Same.

Tigresswoods · 02/01/2024 05:54

I think it gets worse. Gave up waiting for it to improve.

If you think Virgin River is bad, just try Chesapeake Shores!

I loved both!

gerispringer · 02/01/2024 06:06

Easy viewing, great scenery, totally unbelievable - but guess what- I enjoyed it as my expectations were low.

FortunataTagnips · 02/01/2024 06:31

It’s terrible but I love it! Jack is soooo unsexy, though. And what is Brie for (aside from spreading on crackers)?

Unabletomitigate · 02/01/2024 07:36

Stay for the scenery, but the plot does not go anywhere. Am about 1 third in, and watch an episode before bed, occassionaly.

friskybivalves · 02/01/2024 08:10

Charmaine's pregnancy is the same length as an elephant's would be.

No one ever finishes a drink in Jack's Bar. Why hasn't he buy a proper coffee machine instead of serving swill out of those filthy vacuum jugs??

But I love Preach and Doc, for whom I have a hint of the fanny gallops. Lizzie's eyebrows are a character all by themselves. Best of all, I can watch it with DS12. It's our show together ❤️.

FortunataTagnips · 02/01/2024 08:13

Oh, Lizzie’s eyebrows!!

FortunataTagnips · 02/01/2024 08:13

Why does anyone put up with Hope, though??

Same. So dull.

MarleyandMarleyWoooo · 02/01/2024 08:19

Not at all, it’s absolute shite. I’m amazed anyone can bear to watch it 🤣

Thekidsarefightingagain · 02/01/2024 08:22

Silly plot, a season seems to cover about a month in time but yes easy watching and beautiful scenery. I got bored in the end though and gave up on it.

justmyluck1234 · 02/01/2024 08:23

I really enjoyed it!

NeverStopTwinkling · 02/01/2024 08:25

I thought this would be right up my street but couldn't manage past the second episode.

Eddielizzard · 02/01/2024 08:25

If you keep watching, they start stumbling through their lines as tho they've only seen them 5 min before

Sammysquiz · 02/01/2024 08:31

I appreciate everyone grieves differently but she’s only just lost both her baby and her husband, yet for 99% of the time she seems absolutely unbothered (and the other 1% of the time she’s shedding a wistful tear in a beautiful controlled non-snotty manner). Similarly when she was held-up at knifepoint at work she was fine 10 minutes later!

AnImaginaryCat · 02/01/2024 08:32

I don't think it's the kind of series you need to get into. If you haven't enjoyed it from the start just give up.

I watch the first series and enjoyed it as it's just cliche daftness which didn't take much thinking on my part, so great for relaxing. It didn't contain gratuitous violence and I found the storyline entertaining enough to keep me watching.

I lost that interest in season 2 (too slow) so stopped watching . Other people enjoyed it for their own reason kept, and didn't lose interst so kept so they have kept watching.

Ultimately, you won't gain anything from continuing nor lose anything from stopping.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2024 08:36

It's cheesy and predictable but it's like relaxing in a warm bath looking out at a wonderful view.

Actually I'd like to move to retire in Virgin River if it really existed. The great outdoors and a community which pulls together.

35965a · 02/01/2024 08:38

It is rubbish, time makes no sense - a character was pregnant for what felt like 8 years - and it is ridiculous. I love it

Sk8erboi · 02/01/2024 08:44

I started watching it by accident as I was recommended 'Jane the virgin' and just remembered the word virgin and put that on instead but I fell in love with it.

It's very cliche but it's easy viewing and I absolutely love the scenery.
I wish I could just pack up and move to Virgin River, it would solve all my stresses.

I loved the Christmas episode it warmed my heart, cheesy festive crap.. perfect.
