Oh that is sad. I just rewatched the two Marigold movies over the holidays. He was one of those very ordinary-in-real-life looking actors who could be be a chameleon and be virtually unrecognisable in completely different roles. Very underestimated in the UK when you realise some of the of the very famous people he acted with and movies he was in.

EmmaEmerald · 30/12/2023 21:33

Yes, I heard.
I notice the tributes don't mention his stunning performances in...

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

This Beautiful Fantastic

The latter is my cheer up film, it's well worth a watch.

Many thanks to Tom for all his wonderful work, absolutely amazing actor with all the versatility.

musiquo · 30/12/2023 21:35

Superb actor. I loved his turn in The Full Monty. Rest east Tom and thank you x

Floralnomad · 30/12/2023 21:46

Great actor . RIP and condolences to his family and friends .

TheTecknician · 30/12/2023 21:47

I remember him in a feature length drama on television some years ago. He co-starred with Anna Carteret. Their son was about to enrol at a prestigious English University, the same one that TW had apparently attended. Of course, he hadn't and he was exposed as a fraud by the end of the programme.

I came on to mention that! That was "Eskimo Day", in 1996. He was the horribly narcissistic father to his daughter, whom he desperately wanted to attend Queen's College in Cambridge, where he himself had supposedly studied. He was found out when somebody in Cambridge asked him the way, and he had no idea.

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/12/2023 21:56

He was a very nice man (I met him once) and a fantastic actor. Rip.

Namechangeforthisthread45 · 30/12/2023 21:59

Very sad, I loved him.
does anyone remember an early 90s film called Priest, with him, Robert Carlyle and Lesley Sharp? It was a harrowing film but incredibly acted and I’ve never forgotten it.

PuppyMonkey · 30/12/2023 22:00

His “chuffin Nora” in the scene where everybody is dumbstruck by the size of Hugo Spear’s manhood in Full Monty is amongst the most perfect moments in British cinema. RIP Tom.

blackoverbillsmothers · 30/12/2023 22:02

Fabulous actor. So sad to hear of his death.

Nudgethatjudge · 30/12/2023 22:18

A superb actor - always knew he'd deliver.
Sad news.

Tessisme · 30/12/2023 22:23

One of those actors whose name I was always pleased to see. Sorry to hear about his death.

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/12/2023 22:31

Marvellous actor.
RIP

1975wasthebest · 30/12/2023 22:36

Sad news. He was one of those actors I felt like I grew up watching in so many things - First Among Equals, Prime Suspect, In the Name of the Father, Sense and Sensibility, and so on. I honestly can't recall him being less than stellar in anything.

R.I.P and thank you for those wonderful performances!

greengreengrass25 · 30/12/2023 22:39

I believe I saw him in the Crucible at the National in the 90s

He was superb

I thought I hadn't seen him in anything for a while

RIP Tom

DisplayPurposesOnly · 30/12/2023 22:39

Very sad news. Such a versatile actor.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 30/12/2023 22:42

So sad. Loved him in The Full Monty.

SkaneTos · 30/12/2023 22:47

@EmmaEmerald
You have inspired me to watch the whole "This Beautiful Fantastic". I started watching it on TV a couple of years ago, but for some reason never finished watching it.

SkaneTos · 30/12/2023 22:49

Also, R.I.P. Tom Wilkinson.

PainterInPeril · 30/12/2023 23:06

He was fantastic as Mr Pecksniff in Martin Chuzzlewit (1995). He really lifted the character from the book and made him so real. He played him as an odious but humourous creep at the same time. Absolutely brilliant!

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 30/12/2023 23:16

So sad to hear this, love him in the Full Monty.

Ha yes, along with "widgies on parade, bring your own microscope!" 😁

RIP x
