Kingsize ottoman bed?

Our lovely bed is breaking and shall have to be replaced in the new year.

Does anyone have a kingsize ottoman bed? Is it easy to lift? Is the massive space beneath practical? Can you reach things in the middle? Are there any with rigid bases in the storage area? Our underbed area is so rammed with storage; it would be filled with heavy stuff, not just soft bedding and winter jumpers.

We have one in the spare room. It was originally ours, in a house with smaller rooms, so the ottoman part is at the side in two sections, not the end. It has a rigid base, but the side nearest the headboard catches and is difficult to open. It’s full of stuff though, despite my efforts to reduce what we have.

Does that mean the mattress has to fold when you open it up?

Yes, couldn't be without the storage! It lifts up from the end so the whole mattress lifts up.

We have, the base is in 2 sections and the top and mattress lift from the bottom. It has 4 hydraulic lifters which makes it pretty light, the DCs could do it from when we got it and they were about 8 and 10. It's harder to lower again especially if you are short but not so much as to be a problem. I wouldn't get one with less than 4 lifters.

It is amazing, we store so much in it, box files, books, clothes, shoes. When we were renovating upstairs of our house we filled it with three bookcases full of books rather than take them downstairs (took the lighter clothes etc down instead).

No, not at all.

My boys have one each-lifts up easily and is air assisted so not as difficult as you think though still quite heavy. Great storage though

MeOldBamboo · 24/12/2023 13:21

I got a silent night one from Costco. Hydraulic lifts and two sections but one lift with mattress. It is very heavy though and impossible to move once full and in situ.

icebearforpresident · 24/12/2023 13:21

We got one about 6 months ago, lifts at the end and has open storage underneath. Not heavy to lift at all, it was a bit stiff the first couple of times we lifted it but has gotten easier as we lift it. The base is more like 2 single beds attached together so it’s 2 spaces rather than one big open one but we can still get loads in.

We have a super-king ottoman and the storage is invaluable, but ideally it takes two people to lift it, and definitely two to close it (it's hard to put equal pressure on each side on your own and feels like the hydraulics are going to break).

BlueThursday · 24/12/2023 13:21

ours is good and works through a remote control so ability to lift doesn’t even need to be thought about

Cotswoldbee · 24/12/2023 13:24

We have a king size oak one in our spare room.
The storage is really good, we keep a couple of spare duvets and the spare pillows in it but there is room for much more.
Lifts ok, a bit of a heave at the start and then it lifts itself.

Blanketpolicy · 24/12/2023 13:37

We have a double and a single ottoman bed and both are easily lifted and lowered.

They are basic (cheap) ones, solid and very heavy but very practical.

Planning on replacing my Superking Divan with a king ottoman from the same place next time it needs a new mattress.

Fleur405 · 24/12/2023 13:39

We have one. The storage space underneath is sort of divided into with a central divider which I assume helps support the mattress/bed frame. I’m 4ft 11 and not known for my physical prowess - I can easily lift it and reach everything that’s stored.

Boardingmama2 · 24/12/2023 13:40

We have a kingsize ottoman and the DC have a double ottoman each. Wouldn't be without them as they store so much and easy to hide things away quickly if needed!

marshmallowfinder · 24/12/2023 13:54

They're brilliant. I got a side lift ottoman bed from bedsonlegs.co.uk and its fabulous quality. Don't be tempted by v cheap ones you might see. The very best quality gas lift arms are vital. I then bought a lovely Sealy mattress for it. I store absolutely loads in there and it's simplicity itself to lift up.

CheersToAMerryChristmas · 24/12/2023 14:01

Ours is super king . It's heavy to lift but I think it's the ikea mattress that is very heavy - I couldn't shift it when I bought it.

Space is good, but we use it for infrequently used stuff like spare bedding, Xmas decs etc.

RNBrie · 24/12/2023 14:02

We have one and it's fine to lift. We store bedding underneath it in separate storage bags so they're easy to get in a out. I've also labeled the bags so I know what's in there which has made life easier.

Aparecium · 24/12/2023 14:08

This sounds so positive! Good tips about the lifters. Any recommendations of makes or shops?

Looking at pictures, and knowing how much I love my sleigh-style bed, I think I might go for one with headboard and footboard.

Yes we love ours, keep out of season duvets and clothes under it mainly. Very easy to lift.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/12/2023 14:10

We’ve got the Malm ottoman beds from IKEA. They’re really easy to lift. It was important that I would be able to do it myself, and I can. They’re very well made and study too.

MALM white, Ottoman bed, Standard King - IKEA

MALM white, Ottoman bed, Standard King. This bed gives you spacious storage without taking up more floor space. Simply flip up the bed base and hide your things inside. Place it freestanding or with the headboard against a wall.

We just have a divan ( wooden) with drawers on both sides. It has about a foot at the pillow end which doesn’t open. The drawers are on runners, so easy to pull out. Plenty of room in there and easy to get at.
