My dd wants a cake with a Barbie inside, skirt is the cake, for her birthday.

Anyone made their own? Or knows somewhere in nw England that does them?

I was thinking of trying to assemble and decorate one with m and s sponges, two eight inch and a six inch maybe.

Any other more easy cake ideas?

Post pics of your homemade birthday cakes for inspiration!

@captainflash that's a great hack! Agree about not using those stupid cake molds.

My train was inedible, also don't cook the night before. We live and learn!

Nigella Lawson has a recipe and description of how to do it in "How to be a Domestic Goddess." It's her buttermilk birthday cake recipe with quantities doubled.

I’ve baked one in a Pyrex mixing bowl. Just out in a couple of grease proof strips to act as a handle to remove it.

I made one, it was really hard and I didn’t have enough fondant so it looked really crappy, if you make one my only advice is to double the amount of fondant you need. I made this for my nephew he was only 5 so pleased as punch.

I made a cinderella one for my daughter. 4 Sponges, crumb coat, fondant laid loosely to look like fabric. It took time with the fondant but wasn't impossible. I used an 'Icing Artist' tutorial online. I really recommend her videos.

My dm used to make me a crinoline lady cake and I used to love them ( almost 60 now). She is in her 80s now and still makes me a birthday cake!

Oh I used to love doing Barbie cakes and doll cakes for friends and family. Never sold any, as I didn’t do it professionally. Just as gifts.

Two tiers, a round Madeira and a bell shaped Madeira. Never put jam and buttercream in the same layer, alternate them. Wrap doll in clingfilm before putting into the cake.

Be warned, I had to pull all-nighters!
