I suppose it was a long time coming but so sad especially at this time of the year. What a life he had. His wife was totally devoted to him. God speed.

Very sad. 66 isn’t old.

A great character, who lived his life as he wanted to, despite all the comments and admonishments from those who know "better". I think his only nod to convention was getting his teeth fixed a number of years ago. His wife Victoria Mary was a great support to him. Her Insta post on his death is very moving.

On the other hand, he did very well to make it to 65 given the battering his body took over the years. Well done Shane, Ni bheidh a leithead aris ann.

If I Should Fall from Grace Wirh God is a wonderful album. Am only surprised he lasted as long as he did. Also loved "Haunted" the duet with Sinead O Connor. Absolutely bless him.

I cried when I read Victoria's words on Instagram this morning. The Pogues music has a lot of meaning in our household and we're all a bit stunned by this news, even though it was obviously coming soon. The recent photos of him in hospital showed a very frail man.

@EachandEveryone there's a fabulous band called The Mary Wallopers who you might like.

I’ve just seen this anecdote about him from Kiefer Sutherland. Lovely way to be remembered.

May he rest in peace, sadly not a shock. Saw him about 20 years ago at a charity concert, came on for one song and was not sober.

Will always be grateful for the most realistic song about Christmas, Fairytale of New York.

Aw... so many wonderful songs and lyrics. Another vote for Rainy Night in Soho here. As others have said, incredible he lasted so long.

It’s because when are we going to see a good Irish sort of band again? I mean I know I sound old but none of the music today is going to make a mark on the world is it? I’m so glad I have the 79s/80’s and 90’s to look back on as my growing up music.

The Mary Wallopers are a great little band.
And Lankum.
Lisa O Neill is wonderful too.

Summer in Siam.... So beautiful.

The poor fellow. That's too young to die.

He was a true & rare talent- the real deal & will be hugely missed.
What a legacy he's left in the world. I cried when I heard the news. As I did with Sinead O'connor 💔 💔
