I have worked in various roles in marketing for nearly 10 years. Got into it by accident, it's not what I want to do. I have been telling myself for the past 3 years that I will embark on a career change and now I'm ready to start preparing.
What I hate with marketing: I can only describe it as feeling 'open-ended' ie it relies totally on me being creative and coming up with new ideas all the time. I hate working with social media, I find pressure of creating good ideas and successful campaign results makes my anxiety peak. I hate the big meetings, big brainstorming sessions, everyone has big personalities - I'm naturally quiet and I come up with my best ideas on my own, which doesn't suit my current work environment.
Currently the bulk of job relies on my creativeness to create 'the thing' - social media videos, campaigns etc - we of course use data to inform decisions but the result is that I spend all my time creating this big thing (campaign, social media posts) that doesn't really exist, it all feels fake. I hope that makes sense!
I really want to spend my time working with those things that do exist: data, numbers, facts and figures? I also love researching.
I have access to lots of evening courses at my current workplace, I just need a direction to start going in.
Does anyone have any advice for roles that might suit me? Anything to do with data, numbers, researching?
Anyone else who made the jump from marketing for a new career?
I'm ready for a change!!
