Do schools still take on volunteers to listen to children reading?
My mil would really enjoy it. She's in her 70's and an ex primary school teacher.
Would they consider someone like that and not a parent of a child in school?

My friend volunteers in a local primary school library & garden - her only connection to it is knowing one of the staff but she went directly to them not via a charity or organisation. She had to give the names of two referees, another friend & I had to fill in a short questionnaire to vouch for her.

I'm surprised the school have a waiting list of volunteers.

OK maybe she should at some of the kids organisations, Scouts, Guides, Girls Brigade, Boys Brigade. They are always looking for people.
And a teacher who can actually get a bunch of wild Beavers to listen would be music to my ears.

The Beaver leader left, 3 parents have stepped up and they run rings round us. Than the cub leader (a teacher by day) appears, works some magic and casts some sort of spell on them. They all went quiet 🤫

She could perhaps ask to join as a Governor of the local school - she’d be able to do lots of other stuff too.
