Does anyone know why teens keep making this gesture in photos?

Floopyfloop · 08/11/2023 22:05

I run a youth group and we have noticed for the last few weeks that every photo we take ends up with half the group making odd pointy fingers gestures! I have also seen it on other photos so it’s not just some thing my lot are doing!

is there anyone out there who is down with the kids who can tell me what in the sweet baby Jesus they are doing!

Random photo for reference!
Are they being rude?
Have they joined a cult?
Are they just being weird!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 the comments. How can someone say it may have something to do with religion LOL. No one ever heard of 1arda then?

It’s nothing to worry about OP. It’s a pose that was popular when I was just leaving school/starting college in 2015/2016. So many people don’t know what to do with themselves when they have pictures taken so you’ll see people do ✌️or sometimes even 🖕

I see it’s being referred to as ‘keeping it lemon’ nowadays but it was originally 1arda. 1arda basically just means ‘gang shit’ or ‘you dunknow.’ It’s so weird to write it out but typical slang here in South London nearly 10 years ago when I was a teen

Mavissdaviss · 08/11/2023 22:51

Yep, ‘keep it lemon charva’ with that sign means ‘chill out my friend’. Charva is often accompanied by a descriptor like ‘blonde charva’. My DD 13 is teaching me teen.. I’m not fluent yet!

OhpoorMe · 08/11/2023 23:02

The lemon thing is from House of Usher isn't it?

beetr00 · 08/11/2023 23:02

as pp have mentioned, is it this @Floopyfloop?

www.tiktok.com/@nottommymason/video/7280091876814851361?

Keep It Lemon is a British, slang catchphrase that means to “keep it cool” or “keep it fresh”. The origin of the phrase also has links to the album cover for the Stone Roses album, The Stone Roses.

The phrase is also associated with the slang term “chav” (or “charva”) and the chav stereotype of loud, unrefined British louts. In the trend, TikTokers often parody chavs by doing a one-finger point, wearing clothing from brands like Nike and Stone Island, and listening to stereotypically “chav” music — drum & bass and UK garage, among other techno genres specific to the UK.

DiscoBeat · 08/11/2023 23:04

I'm glad you brought this up as our eldest DS15 especially is always doing this! He says it means 'keep it lemon' but he's never particularly keen letting me in on their secret language and took off upstairs with no more to say on the matter so I'm none the wiser. DS13 doesn't do it but says it 'basically means making fun of Chavs'.

At the moment DD(15)s friends are posting pictures of themselves in lingerie pretending to be Halloween costumes or vapes down their cleavage.

Blacking out bits of the photo seems to be in or bedroom shots where the boyfriend is topless and the girl is in a strappy top yo insinuate they’ve been up to something. I was telling DD that when adults are in a relationships people assume they are having sex it’s what adults do they don’t feel the need to broadcast it like teens do.

Oh how nice! 🤢Thank you. My daughter doesn’t have a phone but one of the mums had given my number to their daughter and they’d added my daughter to the WhatsApp group. Luckily I left the group as I got fed up of the constant photos.

XelaM · 08/11/2023 23:23

My 13-year-old does this! She's been privately educated since reception and her main hobby is equestrian show jumping, yet she thinks of herself as very "street" 😎

I was trying to think what we did as teens back in ye 20th century then remembered the inevitable bunny ears behind someone's head. Only it took ages for the photographer to click the button then realise the lens cap was on, then take off the lens cap, then wind on the film then take the photo so it was never as spontaneous as it could be...

Funny. The last time teens were even remotely edgy or dangerous was 1976.

VintageBlossomHill · 08/11/2023 23:29

@beetr00 Im hoping that theyre mimicking and they’re clueless about what it means!

Plus you had to wait till you'd used up the roll then take it into town and wait a week or more to get the photos back.

Not many kids had cameras when I was in my teens. Boys used to pull Les dawsonesque gurning faces whenever they so much as caught a glimpse of a camera I seem to recall. Also spreading your arms out and posing like you were falling over was popular for some reason.

Christ teenagers are weird. Were we this weird?

Probably - but in different ways! I was a teen in the 80s so well before social media. We had our music (the best) and a few words such as 'ace' that belonged to our generation, but this is a whole new level! And changes every couple of weeks......

I suppose we made our statements through hairstyles, punk, new romantics, goths, whatever - rather than social media type gimmicks. But then again - we'd have loved it had it been around.......

Teenagehorrorbag · 08/11/2023 23:36

Oh and CB radio - who remembers that? Weird.......Grin

Now that’s a pose they shouldn’t be doing. It’s referencing giving oral sex to a woman. I remember doing that pose in a group picture when I was in year 8 and I got told off by my form tutor😂
