But niche, but is anyone good at reading vintage maps?

Inspired by another thread. I’ve placed an order of a vintage map print for our first anniversary. It can be personalised and I’d like to highlight the island we honeymooned on/ the problem is I can’t find it! It’s a map of the North Pole and we went to Uløya off the coat of Norway. This is the map and I’ve been told it’s in this area https://uniquemaps.co.uk/products/old-north-pole-exploration-map-1896-by-us-navy-atlas-explorer-map-of-the-arctic-circle

Obviously that should say ‘bit niche’

Maybe it wasn't visible at that date? Under ice cover? How old is the map?
Fab honeymoon destination and gift idea.

Thanks! The map is from 1896. The island was definitely inhabited then. It may not appear on the map but I could still have where it is marked- if I can locate it 😂

I just copied and pasted Uloya into google maps and it comes up. If you zoom out will you be able to recognise the shape on your old map?

Here's the north coast of Norway on googlemaps at the same angle, you can see Hammerfest on each map, not sure why Tromsø isn't on both. The island you are looking for is circled in red on google maps.

So it's there, on Stor Fd.

Looks like you got it sorted but you can check the location on various old maps here.

I think I’ve narrowed it down to two. Can anyone help?

I think you've marked the smaller Årøya on your first image, Uløya is the larger island further out to sea. It's not straightforward, it looks like a sea map rather than a land map and it doesn't have north at the top. And old maps aren't always entirely accurate but looking at the more distinctive islands I think I'm right. If you go on the satellite view on googlemaps it might help you identify the island, Uløya is much larger and more hilly than Årøya. Does that sound right?

It's the picture on the right. Uløya is the larger island to the left of the other one. @JaninaDuszejko had it right on her 1439 post.
