This article on helicopter parenting of an adult daughter CANNOT be for real, surely?!

I read this just now and I actually cannot believe my eyes. If I saw it on Mumsnet I would honestly think it was a reverse. I just want to shake the daughter, give her a
hug, and tell her she doesn’t have to live this way.

Meddlesome mum whose daughter is 33 but Emma tracks her online

EMMA PARSONS-REID: Every morning, my husband wakes me with a cup of tea and hands me my phone. Before I've even had a sip, I'll check for any messages from my only child, Hannah.

Made up for clickbait imo

theduchessofspork · 02/11/2023 08:39

It’ll be massively exaggerated for effect. The DM pays well and relies on clickbait

There's another thread on this. I'm not clicking on the Daily Mail site for either.

This reads like a pastiche of helicopter parenting. I think they are taking the piss. 😂

Outandontheotherside · 02/11/2023 09:16

I have a friend like the mother. Her daughter is 27 and it's not exaggeration or made up. I rarely see friend now.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 02/11/2023 09:24

I am from a very controlling family and I think they've planned it for the Daily Mail payout. Everyone I know who behaves like this swears blind what they are doing is normal/claims they're not doing anything wrong.

If it is true, they all need a lot of help for a lot of different issues.

LOL I thought her name looked familiar. How are the papers not wise to how many times they've written cheques to the same woman? Or do they print it all in full knowledge that it's total garbage and that they paid her last week to say she was a racing car driver or an alien? Doesn't that violate their code of ethics?
Here's her next story:
"I am the country's best paid troll: I make things up to get paid by national tabloids"

Ifailed · 02/11/2023 09:39

The hard-right press have always published nonsense like this, does anyone really take any of it seriously?

BiscuitsandPuffin · 02/11/2023 09:45

@Ifailed the left do it too though. It's not exclusive to one political standpoint. At least one of the articles linked by a PP was for the Mirror. And I've seen plenty of made up crap in the Grun or (worse) the "Indy 100" although theirs is usually designed to underscore the political point or big issue du jour. Usually the broadsheets are clever enough to not use the same source over and over though. What I've never seen before is one person basically working as a professional liar.

I suspect they have her on speed dial 😂

I imagine they have a pool of writers to make up shit like this - see also Samantha Brick.

I’ve done a click baity story for the Mail before, Sam Brick (who is lovely, and very funny) takes a few quotes from you and spins it into an almost unrecognisable story. They send you a bag of wrap dresses and nude heels to choose from and a photographer comes to your house and sets up a white background. You get a make up artist and everything.

Great fun, and all very transparent. And I got around £300 for it.

I’m genuinely surprised that anyone would want to do this for £300, unless they were completely broke/desperate. (I am sorry if this is/was your situation).

I can’t imagine anything worse than appearing in the DM wearing their horrible primary coloured dresses and nude shoes! And also the DM usually make these people look like idiots. Were you not embarrassed?!

I spat my tea out at the wrap dresses and nude heels. It's the DM uniform.

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/11/2023 11:56

I've almost been in the DM... when they want to portray you as a goodie (even if you're awful!!)... then yes you get the make up artist, nice location, they'll drag you off somewhere nicer if necessary..

Fortunately mine was dropped (it was about Cesar Milan, just after the Titchmarsh Interview... I had a very very pretty Afghan hound mix dog at the time who had been absolutely fucked up by people following him to the letter)... but they turned up and dolled me up, we went to my dads country pile, not my scruffy ex-council house.

If they want you to be the baddie, there'll be none of that at all!

It was just a bit of fun, for a totally fluff piece. It was meant to be hidden deep in the back in Femail but it did end up with a splash on the cover so I was famous for a day 🤣🤣🤣 but honestly it was completely harmless and easy money (and a great anecdote to amuse people as well, also a cautionary tale about believing what they print). I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Fair play to you if you’re comfortable with it and it worked out ok. It’s the stuff of nightmares for me so I think you’re bloody crackers! 🤣
