Anyone else feel icky away from home?

Currently away from home for the week and experiencing a life long problem…genuine ickiness about hotel showers, beds, carpets, cups, kettles…you name it, it makes my toes curl. To the point that it makes me desperate for my own shower and bed! It’s not homesickness in the sense that I’m sad or missing home. It’s like a disgust response but there’s nothing disgusting!

But I never hear anyone else ever describe this feeling! Place we are staying seems clean enough and it’s not specific to this place anyway. It is anywhere! Not just hotels. Any kind of holiday accommodation.

I don’t feel this way staying with family (as in at the home of either of my parents) and maybe one or two close friends although it’s been a long time since I slept at a friend’s house.

Is this just me?!

Oh wow I have this! Less so in places that are really very immaculately clean, but yes.

ManAboutTown · 03/11/2023 15:54

For those who feel ikcy about hotel rooms I can guarantee someone has had sex oretty much everywhere - shower , bath , desk chair, desk. Watch out for unusual looking stains 😂

KeepJoggingOn · 03/11/2023 16:00

I can't stand sleeping on any other bed apart from my own.

creativegoblin · 03/11/2023 16:10

Imagine having a shower and suddenly you realise, as the hot water drips down your face, that the shower head could have been inside someone's anus. Luckily I don't have those thoughts

Well done - that was even better than my effort to stoke up the squeamishness😂

Yes I feel like this. I have sensory processing issues and ADHD though. It doesn't stop me going away and I don't clean everything in the room or anything, but I never feel as "fresh" as I do at home. Like I can't properly be clean and comfortable. I stay with a relative often who has black mould in the bathroom and I just can't shower there at all. I keep it to myself though!!

Ickyholiday1 · 03/11/2023 16:22

Definitely not just you. It's been getting progressively worse the last couple of years and can't imagine enjoying a holiday again! I can't relax at all, and sleep really badly away from home.

It's often suggested on MN when someone is overwhelmed that they should check themselves into a hotel for a couple of days to relax while leaving DH at home with DC. I can't imagine willingly checking into a travelodge when I could just be at home. This would be the least relaxing thing for me ever!

I am exploring therapy for possible mildanxiety/OCD though!

@Greatbigfluffytrousers

No but I come from a farming family and have literally had my head shit on by a dairy cow twice.

Haha. Post of the day :)

What do you want ? A pat on the head ?

peppermintcrisp · 03/11/2023 16:24

YANBU. I enjoy camping now. I hate other people's filth! Especially bodily fluids.

If you are getting bodily fluids when camping you should change who you share the tent with.

Recently I've experienced the opposite - the hotel bedding was so impeccably ironed and apparently STARCHED I didn't feel worthy to put my head on it. When I did it made a softest crunchy sound, like breaking a crust on crème brulée!

peppermintcrisp · 03/11/2023 16:34

Lol! 🤣

Houseplanter · 03/11/2023 16:35

I completely agree

The cushions and throws get dumped in a corner- disgustingly never washed

I don't let myself think about pillows, duvet, mattress. I have a washable pair of slippers I always take away and will not stand barefoot on the carpet.

I've just come back from a couple of days away and am a bit bothered by bedbugs after all the stuff in the news recently.

anotherside · 03/11/2023 16:58

Meh. Everywhere’s full of germs.

Pugdays · 03/11/2023 17:08

I have awful problems with this ,to the point I can't drink the water and we take huge bottles of it .I can't use kettle and take my own or toaster ,or use the oven ,and I take all my own plates and cups and cutlery.
I also take insense to burn ,to take away any smells
However
I have a diagnosis of autism,so I assumed it was down to that

Chere · 03/11/2023 17:14

Same here! Always on tiptoes in hotel showers, use bottom of sleeves on handles, disinfect remotes etc.

I have no idea how people could ever bathe in a hotel bath. The idea repulses me.

I felt this way even in the Dorchester. Kept it to myself as I know DP finds it all a bit extreme.

Chere · 03/11/2023 17:18

The moon cup in the kettle has vindicated every fear I had.

Humans are gross and inconsiderate

ladeluge · 03/11/2023 17:19

There are many atypical and extreme posters here. I think the problem is theirs, not the clean (to the rest of us) accommodation.

Including us.

AlocasiaPolly · 03/11/2023 17:29

Staying in hotels really bothers me too. I hate the thought of sleeping in a bed that has seen goodness knows what, I won't walk barefoot to the carpet, I wash all mugs etc even though they look clean, and I feel uncomfortable all the time I'm there. Travelling is not a pleasure for this reason.

Take some cleaning stuff and clean it before you use it.

Excellent. 😉

RampantIvy · 03/11/2023 17:32

Having read what happens in hotels on here I always wash out cups and spoons and rinse out the kettle several times before use, but I think that is normal level of cleanliness.

Some of the other stuff on this thread is bonkers. How do these people manage to leave the house?

searchfortruth · 03/11/2023 17:43

I'm ok in holiday let's buy hotels make me squirm for sure!
