Recommendations for books to read in Wintertime

It’s the first properly autumnal morning of the year here. So naturally bookwormish thoughts are turning to cuddling up with cosy, spooky, funny or thought provoking winter books. Plus perhaps all the cosy cliches that make some MNers tut, like fairy lights, candies and woolly socks.

Last year I enjoyed The Snow Song by Sally Gardner, as well as Wintering by Katherine May and The Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater (both rereading)

I can’t wait to get stuck into Jeanette Winterson’s new book of ghost stories.

Any recommendations for books perfect for winter reading?

And of course Father Christmas, by Raymond Briggs! Someone gave it to a very little dd one Christmas decades ago - I was heavily pregnant with dd2 and I laughed so much, my mother said, ‘At this rate you’ll start your baby off!’

Absolutely second the suggestion of Dark Matter and The Little Stranger.

Thanks, OP, for this discussion. Autumn/winter is absolutely made for snuggling up with a good book.

Ooh, and Agatha Christie's Halloween Party. Perfect.

For classics, Little Women at Christmas - the first line!
Otherwise - Love in a Cold Climate; Once Upon a River; Snow Falling on Cedars; and the daddy of them all, War and Peace.

For those with Kindle Unlimited, I'm really enjoying the Shani Struthers Psychic Survey books at the moment, they're nice and spooky.

"Boy, Snow, Bird" by Helen Oyeyemi is a great one! A bit melancholy but with a great twist ending.
