A&E or not for this cut? (TW: gross picture)

On our last night of holiday and my husband has cut his hand on a glass. Lots of blood at the time but mostly stopped now. However, it looks quite deep and I personally think it might need stitches.

NHS advice says to seek treatment at urgent care or A&E if it’s deep and to a hand. No urgent care anywhere near, so only A&E. Do you think he should go? Picture attached

Yea, it needs pulling together. Can he fully use the finger and has he got full sensation all over it ?

Yes, definitely. My friend had similar and needs complex surgery to fix the tendon because she didn't go straight away.

PinkButtercups · 20/08/2023 21:48

Ouch! Yes looks like it needs stitches. Go to A&E.

Lindy2 · 20/08/2023 21:57

Yes. I have no doubt that, that cut should really be looked at.

I don't think it's going to heal well on its own because it's going to keep opening when he moves his finger. It needs to be closed and dressed. Somehow he is also going to need to keep it still and dry. I'd also be worried about tendon damage or glass still in the cut.

If you phone 111 they should be able to tell you the best place to go.

Sorry for the rubbish end to your holiday.

Yes needs sutures.

NewYorkFirstTimer · 20/08/2023 22:19

Yeah that needs looking at tbh

Snapplepie · 20/08/2023 22:37

Yes- that needs a&e. Apart from it needing stitches the worry would be that he has managed to cut one of the tendons in his hand and it would need to be looked at to check this. Important to go ASAP because if there is tendon damage it can retract over time which makes them harder to find and repair.

Yes. There could be glass in it.

Wrongsideofpennines · 20/08/2023 22:45

Having done a work placement in hand therapy - yes. Might be internal damage but also needs cleaning properly and pulling together or may struggle to heal.

SirChenjins · 20/08/2023 22:47

Yes - and tell him to take the gas and air if they give him a ring block before the stitches, it’s a bit stingy

Forgetmesnot · 20/08/2023 22:56

Thanks all, I have just dropped him off at A&E. He said it’s not too painful and he can still feel the finger but I agree that the skin needs to be brought back together otherwise it will keep opening.

We live quite rurally back at home and our nearest A&Es/urgent cares are all about 40 mins away. However, the hospital near here is only a 7 minute drive so it makes sense to go now rather than when we get back home.

That sounds like a sensible decision. I hope he managed to get it sorted.
