Why are supermarkets so busy on Fridays?

Locally all the big supermarkets around me are reliably busier on Fridays. Why? It’s not a day I’d pick to do my weekly shop but sometimes I nip in for a couple of things and notice entire families doing big food shops. Are you a Friday shopper and if so why?! Everyone’s got one pace and it seems to be 0.1mph 😂

Possibly pay day?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/08/2023 16:43

Because people want to buy nice food in for the weekend.

Talipesmum · 18/08/2023 16:43

Because they’re buying food for the week? If people have one day off per week it’s often Friday, and you can get nice things in fresh for the weekend meals. And stock up for weekday meals the next week.

We always get our food delivery on sat early morning or Friday for this reason.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/08/2023 16:46

Buying in food for the weekend when you know what your plans are/ weather's going to do.

Beezknees · 18/08/2023 16:51

Lots of people finish work early on a Friday so I expect they go in to avoid having to do it on Saturday or Sunday.

Devilsmommy · 18/08/2023 16:52

Payday most likely

rurbane · 18/08/2023 16:53

In my town the supermarkets are incredibly busy on Sundays, about noon.

BitchImTheSecretIngredient · 18/08/2023 16:53

Im an online shopper and we have the most orders on Fridays. I assume because of payday/weekend plans

birdsofafeatherr · 18/08/2023 17:03

When people used to get paid weekly it was usually on a Friday, I imagine some people are just in the habit of that.
For other people it will be when there work is over or childcare is over for kids, or so they don't have to worry over the weekend.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 18/08/2023 17:03

Loads of people have Fridays off these days .
Our local supermarkets are rammed on Fridays so we don't tend to go on that day or we go first thing.

Where I worked, many people chose to not work on Fridays.

starfishmummy · 18/08/2023 17:04

I am able to.shop midweek, I'd only go on a Friday or at the weekend in an emergency or if we'd just arrived back from holiday and need supplies.

AvengedQuince · 18/08/2023 17:07

Payday for weekly paid people. I've only been monthly paid for a year, my DS is employed by the local job agency and isweekly paid.

Shopping for fresh food for the weekend

Early finish on a Friday so more time

Avoiding wasting the weekend-proper on shopping

purplecorkheart · 18/08/2023 17:10

Our local Supermarket tends to be better stocked on Friday and Saturdays especially for fresh items than earlier in the week. I do tend to shop on a Friday morning but it is quite quiet at that time. By lunch time it does tend to be crazy.

2catsandhappy · 18/08/2023 17:21

Pay day.
Stocking up for weekend.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/08/2023 17:22

Wine and snacks for the weekend.

VitaminNinja · 18/08/2023 17:27

That’s true I didn’t think of people who are paid weekly

Op i asked myself the same question when I went to big Tesco just after lunch. It was absolutely busy even a queue to the car park. I always do my shopping on Wednesday evening but I couldn’t do it this week so I decided to go today. I will stick to my Wednesday 😂

It’s crazy isn’t it! Logically you’d think people would choose, I dunno, Sunday or Monday - for the week ahead. Haha

But then you are stuck eating leftovers and the longer lasting fruit and veg at the weekend, unless you still do a top up shop on Friday or Saturday. The weekend is when I want the nicer food.

Exactly! Shop for the weekend first!
